Vastu for the pooja room focuses on bringing peace and positive energy to the home. If you plan to install the pooja room, it should be in the northeast corner. Facing east and praying is ideal; this direction allows sunlight to enter freely, brings health, wealth, peace and happiness in the family.

Vastu for Pooja Room - Quick Information

Check out the Table below for detailed information about the direction, placement & colours:

AspectsVastu Recommendation
Ideal DirectionNortheast (It is the best place for a pooja room as it brings positive energy)
Alternative DirectionNorth or East (If the northeast direction is not available, then north or east is a good option)
Directions to AvoidSouth, southwest or directly in front of the bathroom areas should be avoided because it blocks positive energy
Idol FacingThe Idols should be facing the west, and you should face the east while praying
Places to avoid for placing an idolAvoid placing the idol near the wall, in the bedroom, or with the damaged part.
Pooja room location as per VastuAs per Vastu, the location should be on the ground floor in the northeast part of the house.
Door & WindowsOne door and one window in the east or north wall. Try to keep the door two-shuttered and close it after use.
Altar placementIt should be a few inches above the floor and never be placed directly on the ground. Place it in the east or northeast corner.
Colors & LightingUse light colours like yellow, pink, and blue to create a calm atmosphere. The light should be soft and natural. You can also use diyas in the evening.
FlooringMarble or wood flooring is recommended. Try to avoid black colour flooring.

This is a critical space in a home; the most positive energy comes from here. But, if you make mistakes with the pooja room Vastu direction, this will impact the energy you bring into your home. To see the best results, keep these points in mind. Check some of the Pooja Room Designs for Indian Homes.

  • According to Vastu, your pooja room should always be on the North, East, or Northeast side of the house.
  • The roof of the pooja room should be like a gopura or pyramid structure. This shape is said to enhance the concentration of positive energy in the space.
  • If you have a home with many floors, the pooja room position, as per Vastu, should be on the ground floor. Having it in the basement or on the top floors is not advised.
  • According to Vastu, the pooja room should never be placed in a bedroom or on a wall adjacent to a bedroom.
  • We don’t have a pooja room under the stairs.
  • Pooja rooms need to induce a sense of peace, so it’s better to use colours like white, pale yellow, or light blue for the walls. Avoid dark, bold and bright colours here.
  • For the pooja room, you need a high-quality wood two-shutter door with a threshold so insects don’t enter this sacred space.
  • Any idol you place in the pooja room can’t be placed directly in front of the entrance door.
  • The ideal height of the idol should not be more than 9 inches and less than 2 inches. If you can avoid placing an idol, that is even better.
  • The idol must also be 6 inches above the ground and an inch away from the wall. Nothing should be stored above it.
  • Don’t have images of a dead relative, war and death in the pooja room.
  • Don’t keep anything that is broken in the pooja room. If an idol or picture breaks, replace it immediately.
  • When praying or meditating, you should face the East or North.  The Pooja room direction needs to be oriented accordingly.
  • Fire offerings should be made facing the East, and the lamp should be placed in the Southeast corner of the pooja room.
  • Have a window in the northeast direction so that there is lighter here. Although there is light coming from your lamp and diya, you can always add artificial light to this room.

10 Vastu tips for Pooja Room

10 vastu tips for pooja room

A well-designed pooja room as per the Vastu attracts peace and positive energy into the house. Follow the below practical and easy steps to create a peaceful and sacred pooja room for good vibes:

1. Choose the Best Direction

Choosing the right direction according to Vastu is really important. Always try to build the pooja room in the northeast corner of the house to attract positive and spiritual energy. Avoid the south-facing direction because it blocks the positive energy.

    2. Placing of the Idols and Images

In the pooja room, according to the Vastu, the idol should be placed at least 6 inches above the ground. It should be in the east that will bring clarity and divine energy. The idols should not be facing each other or close to the wall.

      3. Avoid the Wrong Location as per Vastu

Never make the pooja room near the bathroom, bedroom or under the staircase because these block positive energy. It should be clean and clutter free.

        4. Pooja Room Colour

The pooja room colour as per the vastu should be light colours like blue, white, cream, and pastel shades to create a perfect ambience for praying. Avoid dark colours for the pooja room.

          5. Place a Gopura or Dome Ceiling

The pooja room with a pyramid or dome-shaped ceiling is perfect because it creates a temple-like space. A low ceiling is also a good option because it creates an intimate and sacred feeling while praying.

            6. Good Ventilation

While making a pooja room, keep in mind to make a window or a small ventilator in the north or east wall. When natural light enters the room, it gives a positive energy and brightens it. In the evening, place a diya or incense to bring freshness.

              7. Avoid Broker Idols

As per Vastu keeping a broken or cracked idol is not recommended as it disturbs the spiritual energy of the pooja room. It can cause stress and discomfort in the house. Remove them respectfully.

                8. Keep the Place Clutter-Free

It is very important to keep the area neat and tidy. Avoid keeping heavy furniture or unnecessary storage items. Keep the pooja or prayer books in a drawer or shelf below waist level.

                  9. Placement of Cabinets

When placing the cabinet in the pooja room, it should be in the southeast direction to avoid blocking the sunlight. Cabinets should not be built above the idol as they bring negative energy.

                    10. Us Two-Shutter Door

Install a two-door wooden entrance for the pooja because it separates the worship place from the rest of the house to bring positivity and purity. Keep the door to the prayer room.

Pooja Room Vastu for West-Facing House

The pooja room in a home facing west should be either northeast or eastward. These instructions are the best suited for bringing heavenly forces into the house. The pooja room's gods should face east so that, should the house's residents be praying, they are facing west. A square or rectangular-shaped pooja room is advised, as uneven forms could disturb the energy flow. The pooja room décor should be kept calm and spiritual by using light and calming hues like white, pale yellow, or beige. Create a holy environment by utilising proper lighting, ventilation, and cleanliness as per the pooja room vastu for the west-facing house.

Since square or rectangular forms are ideal in Vastu, the pooja room should be shaped in these ways. White, soft yellow or light blue décor will help to accentuate the peace of the place. These hues provide a calm environment fit for prayer and meditation.

the right position of the pooja room
The Right Pooja Room as per Vastu

As per the ancient science of architecture, i.e., the Vastu Shastra, the right pooja room direction as per Vastu is the northeast. Other than the northeast, you can also consider the north and east as the best direction for the pooja room as per the Vastu pooja room facing. Besides the position, note that the ideal pooja room size, as per Vastu, should be at least 5x7 feet for two to three people to come and pray in peace.

In case you are also wondering if the pooja room door should open inside or outside, the door should be kept open towards the outside so that the opening or closing of the door doesn’t affect any person sitting near the door inside the small pooja room. As per Vastu, the pooja room in the kitchen should also be positioned in the northeast, east, or north walls. If you plan to keep your pooja room at an elevation, then the pooja room steps, as per Vastu, should be in odd numbers, i.e., 3, 9, 11, 15, 21, etc. and never-ending in zero.
