India Offers Land to Businesses Exiting China

May 6, 2020: According to sources, India is cultivating a considerable large land pool to attract businesses moving out of China given the pandemic situation. A total area of 461,589 hectares has been marked out across many parts of the country for the purpose. That includes 115,131 hectares of existing industrial land in states of Gujarat, Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh.
Availability of land has been one of the biggest hindrances for enterprises looking to invest in India. Prime Minister Modi’s administration is working with state governments to facilitate the acquisition of land pool for investors as they look to reducing dependence on China as a manufacturing base in the aftermath of the COVID-19 outbreak.
The government has selectively picked sectors such as electrical, pharmaceuticals, medical devices, electronics, heavy engineering, solar equipment, food processing, chemicals and textiles as core areas for encouraging manufacturing in India. The mentioned states have also been separately urged to develop their own programs to lure in foreign investments.

It has urged embassies abroad to recognize companies exploring for options to invest in India. Invest India, the government’s investment agency, has received multiple inquiries from countries such as Japan, the U.S., South Korea and China, that have expressed interest in relocating to the Asia’s third-largest economy.
The four countries (Japan, USA, South Korea and China) are among India’s top 12 trading partners, and account for total bilateral trade of $179.27 billion.
