The lockdown to curb the spread of COVID-19 has changed the way we live. Our lives have done an almost 180-degree twist and is no longer the same as it was just a few months ago. Having to stay at home is both a blessing and a task for some of us. We can no longer depend on maids, cooks and other domestic help to take care of the house, we now need to manage the cooking, cleaning, gardening and other home chores along with our regular jobs! This might seem like too much work at first, but with the right chore schedule, you’ll find life a lot easier. Divide chores The best thing about the lockdown is that everyone is home together. So, you don’t have to worry about doing all the chores at home by yourself, you can get everyone in the family to pitch in and help out. You can divide chores based on their age and the time they have to spare, for example, kids can do more than those who are working from home, as they have more free time. Plan chores according to the right time It’s important to plan your day according to the time you have, for example, if you’re working from 9 am to 5 pm, then you need to plan your chores after and before that. If your spouse starts work at 11 am and ends and 8 pm, then their chore timing will be different, the same goes for the kids. All cleaning doesn’t have to be done daily You can skip a few chores and do them on alternate days so that you don’t have a long list every day! You can do laundry and mopping on alternate days, dusting and sweeping need to be done daily, watering the plants can be done daily or every other day (depending on the hardiness of the plants) and so on. Few chores need to be a group endeavour Tasks, like cooking, and doing the laundry, are great for the whole family to do together. While cooking, one does the chopping, one does the clean-up, one does the stirring, one can set the dishes and so on. When it comes to laundry, one can put the clothes to wash, one can dry them, one can bring them in, one can do the ironing or folding, and so on.

Make a rotational chore calendar To avoid getting bored, it’s a good idea to switch things up and give people a chance to do different tasks. This way, one person doesn’t always get stuck with folding clothes or with watering plants, they get to do different tasks on a daily or weekly basis. This also brings in fairness as not one person gets stuck with all the easy or hard tasks.

Try to reduce the chores that need to be done If there aren’t many people around to help, then look for ways to reduce the number of chores you have to do. You can plan your meals in advance, this way you cook more (for 2-3 days or the week) in advance, store it in the fridge and you won’t have to cook for the week! You will also have much fewer dishes to wash daily. You can also look at ways to avoid using unnecessary plates, spoons or other utensils, this way you wash fewer dishes. Get things done as soon as possible Schedule tasks so that nothing is left pending for too long. When it comes to the dishes, try to get them washed as soon as possible, don’t let them pile up in the sink. When you’re using things in the house, ensure to put it back in the right place as soon as possible. This way your house will look and feel more organized and you'll have less to do at the end of the week.
