Why My AC is Consuming more Power?

When our AC was not working properly, I called an AC technician and asked him why my AC is consuming more power. After scrutinising our AC, he observed that the dirty air filter was hampering the cooling efficiency of our appliance. This forced our AC to work harder to cool the room, thereby leading to higher power consumption. However, there can be other reasons for the increased electricity consumption of the AC so let me share a few of them here.

If the AC unit is too large for the space it's cooling, it may cycle on and off frequently, wasting energy. Conversely, an undersized unit may run continuously to try to meet the cooling demands, also leading to higher power consumption.

• Leakages in Ducts: 

Ductwork with leaks or poor insulation can result in cooled air escaping before reaching the intended areas, causing the AC to run longer to achieve the desired temperature, thus consuming more power.

• Old or Inefficient Equipment:

Inverter ACs use variable-speed compressors, adjusting their speed to match the cooling needs, unlike traditional ACs that operate at fixed speeds. This allows inverter ACs to maintain a more consistent temperature and avoid frequent cycling on and off, resulting in lower power consumption and increased energy efficiency compared to non-inverter models.
