To reiterate, I’d like to say that the precise shade of purple you create will depend on how much blue and red you add to your mixture.  Adding additional red or blue will result in a purple that is both redder and bluer. Purple can be made by combining other colours, however blue and red are necessary to make all shades of purple.  A lighter purple will result from combining white, yellow, or grey with your blue and red combo. Your purple will be darker if you add black to your blue and red mixture.  I hope this answer suffices your query about what colours make purple. When you start teaching your children, you get the chance to learn or remember a lot of things. For the last 5 years, I have become completely detached from my favourite hobby, painting. Believe it or not, when my daughter asked which colors make purple, I paused for a moment and couldn’t remember. I looked at the colours and tried to figure it out. After a minute, I asked myself again what two colours make purple and quickly remembered that red and blue make the colour. I asked her to mix them up and was so happy to see the bright purple colour.

  • Ultramarine blue and quinacridone magenta
  • Ultramarine blue and permanent rose
  • Ultramarine blue and Alizarin crimson
You can also try mixing a bit of yellow to purple to get a bright medium shade of it. Other purple shades you can get are by mixing:
  • Purple + cadmium yellow = muted purple
  • Purple + yellow ochre = dark muted purple
  • Purple + hansa yellow = muted purple
