Summary
Plastic emulsion paint typically covers 100–130 sq ft per litre for one coat and 60–90 sq ft per litre for two coats. For rough or porous, unprimed surfaces, coverage may reduce to 70–90 sq ft per litre per application. Actual coverage depends on the wall condition, with rough, old or cracked walls requiring more paint.

Plastic emulsion paint covers around 100 to 130 square feet per litre for 1 coat and 60 to 90 square feet for 2 coats, which I believe is sufficient for most walls. The exact plastic emulsion paint coverage area varies by the current condition of your wall. It is like the smoother the wall, the less paint you use. If your wall is rough, old, or has cracks, it will drink more paint. I learned about this when I hired a painter last month.

How Much Area Does 1 Litre of Plastic Emulsion Paint Cover?

  1. 1 coat: A litre of paint may typically cover 100 to 130 square feet.

  2. 2 coats: Since the second coat also contains paint, one litre will cover approximately 60 to 90 square feet. This is often recommended for a superior finish.

  3. A 20-litre bucket with one coat may cover approximately 2,000 to 2,600 square feet.

  4. A 20-litre bucket with two coats provides coverage of approximately 1,200 to 1,600 square feet.

However, for rough or porous surfaces, coverage reduces to 70 to 90 square feet per litre per application because unprimed plaster or concrete absorbs more liquid.

How to Calculate the Emulsion Paint Needed for a Room?

  1. Measure the walls: To determine the total area in square feet, multiply the wall's length by its height.

  2. Deduct doors and windows: Subtract the area of doors and windows that do not need to be painted.

  3. Find the required quantity: To estimate how much paint is needed, divide the final wall area by 100 for one coat or 70 for two coats.

  4. Keep some extras: Add approximately 10% more paint to your estimate. This helps to cover uneven or rough walls.

Also, my painter informed me not to focus entirely on room size and to ignore the state of the old walls when you buy paint. I hope this helps.
