- Clean the walls.
To remove grime, grease, and chalky residue, clean the surface with a mild detergent solution using a sponge or cloth. Rinse with clean water and allow the wall to dry completely.
- Sand and rough up the surface.
Lightly sand glossy or semi-gloss paint with fine-grit sandpaper, approximately 180-220 grit. This results in a slightly rough surface that improves the putty bond.
- Repair the cracks and holes.
Do not use wall putty to repair serious cracks or large holes.
Repair those places first using an appropriate cement-based repair mortar or crack filler.
Then allow the material to set completely.
- Apply primer.
Adding one layer of a good bonding primer is optional, but suggested.
It can help build a stronger bond between the old painted surface and the new putty.
Let the primer completely dry before proceeding.
- Apply the wall putty.
Once the prepared surface is clean and dry, apply a suitable wall putty as per the manufacturer's directions. The type of putty used should also be determined by whether the wall is internal or external.
