Summary
You can apply texture and paint over wallpaper if it is firmly attached and in good condition. First, clean the surface and repair any loose edges or joints. Apply a suitable primer and let it dry. Then apply the texture in a thin layer. Once dry, apply one or two coats of paint for an even finish.

Yes, you can apply texture and paint over wallpaper, but it depends on the wallpaper's condition and type. I recently checked this with my painter while working on a wall, and he explained that you must properly prepare the wall before applying any texture or paint.

How to Apply Texture and Paint Over Wallpaper?

  • First, check the wallpaper carefully. It should be firmly attached to the wall, with no loose edges, bubbles, peeling, or damaged sections.

    • If the wallpaper is already coming off, don't apply texture or paint directly over it.

    • The added weight and moisture can make the wallpaper peel further.

  • Next, clean the wallpaper and remove dust, dirt, and grease from the surface. Let the wall dry completely before continuing.

    • My painter also checked the wallpaper's joints and edges.

    • If he found any loose areas, he fixed them before moving to the next step.

  • After that, apply a suitable primer over the wallpaper. The primer helps create a better surface for the texture and paint. Use a primer suitable for the wallpaper and the type of paint you plan to use.

  • Once the primer has dried, you can apply the wall texture. Apply it in a thin, even layer rather than putting too much material on the wallpaper. Let the texture dry properly, following the product instructions.

  • Finally, apply the chosen paint over the dried texture. You may need two coats for an even finish. Allow the first coat to dry before applying the second coat.

So, you can texture and paint over wallpaper if it's firmly fixed and the surface is properly prepared. For badly damaged wallpaper, removing it first is the safer option.
