To select interior paint colours, start with permanent features such as flooring, tiles, fixed furniture, cabinets, and wardrobes, and choose complementary undertones. Consider room size, natural and artificial lighting, and the desired mood. Test large samples in the room before painting. Use the 60-30-10 rule as a starting point and choose a finish based on function and maintenance needs.

The best way to select paint colours for a house interior is to begin with permanent features like flooring, tiles, and fixed furniture, then evaluate the room's size, lighting, and intended mood. You must also choose shades that complement these elements, test large samples, and evaluate them in both natural and artificial light.

I came to know about this from a professional painter I hired recently to paint my entire flat. Below, I have shared the tips and tricks he suggested for how to select paint colors for home interiors.

What Factors Should You Consider When Choosing Interior Paint Colours?

Begin with the aspects that are unlikely to change, such as flooring, tiles, kitchen cabinets, wardrobes, and major furniture. Your wall colour should complement, not compete with, these aspects.

  1. Check if your floors, furnishings, and permanent surfaces have warm, cool, or neutral undertones. Choose paint colours with appropriate undertones.

  2. Consider your room size. Light neutrals, whites, and soft pastels can make smaller or darker rooms appear more expansive. But darker shades can bring warmth and character to bigger areas.

  3. Observe how much sunshine enters the space and compare the chosen shades to the lighting you typically use at night. The same colour can look different in natural and artificial light.

  4. Define the mood of the space. Soft blue, green, and muted neutrals can produce a calming bedroom. But beige, warm white, terracotta, or soft yellow can make living spaces feel warmer and more inviting.

  5. Apply the 60-30-10 rule. As a starting point, use 60% for the dominant colour, 30% for a secondary colour, and 10% for an accent colour in furniture, carpets, pillows, and decor. It is a recommendation, not an absolute need.

  6. To maintain colour flow in open-plan homes or connected rooms, select complementary shades that provide continuity. This allows for different colours in various rooms without creating a disconnected appearance.

  7. Finally, choose a finish based on the room's function and maintenance requirements. A low-sheen or matte coating can also help to hide small wall defects.

So, before painting the entire room, test your shortlisted colours on large boards or sample areas. I hope this helps.
