Summary
To use cement primer on exterior walls, first clean the surface and remove dust, dirt, loose paint, fungus, and algae. Repair cracks or damaged areas and let them dry completely. Allow fresh plaster to set as required. Stir the primer and dilute it only as directed on the label. Apply an even coat with a brush and roller, add a second coat if needed, and let it dry fully before applying exterior paint.

If you are planning to use cement primer for exterior walls, you must clean the surface thoroughly, patch up any problem spots, and make sure everything is completely dry. Then mix your primer and apply it smoothly across the wall. Wait for it to fully dry before you paint over it with exterior paint. When I had my home's walls painted, I observed the steps the painter followed. So, I am sharing the process below.

How to Apply Cement Primer on Exterior Walls?

  1. Get your wall ready:

Wipe away dust, dirt, grease, loose bits, peeling paint, fungus, and algae. Make sure the wall is totally dry.

  2. Fix cracks and holes

: You can now use exterior wall putty or repair material to fill in any cracks and damaged spots. Let everything dry completely before you prime.

  3. Let the new plaster set:

If you have fresh cement plaster on the wall, give it enough time to dry properly before priming. Check what the primer manual says about how long it needs to dry.

  4. Get your primer ready:

Give the primer a good stir until it is smooth. Mix in clean water using only the amount shown on the label. Don't just guess on your own the dilution ratio.

  5. Put on the first coat:

Grab a brush for the corners and edges, then use a roller to cover the big spaces. Make sure you spread the primer evenly so you don't end up with thick spots or drippy areas.

  6. Add a second coat if you need to:

If your walls are super porous or you have done several repairs, you need to add another priming layer. Just wait until the first coat is completely dry before you apply it.

  7. Let it dry:

Stick to the drying and recoating times the manufacturer gives you. Keep in mind that weather and humidity can mess with how fast it dries.

  8. Paint the exterior:

After the primer is totally dry, go ahead and apply your exterior wall paint.

I noticed one thing: getting the surface ready the right way made a huge difference because primer bonds so much better to walls that are clean, dry, and properly repaired. I hope this helps.
