Summary
Yes, texture paint can be applied over an old painted wall if the surface is properly prepared. Remove peeling paint, clean dust and grease, repair cracks and dents with wall putty, and smooth the surface with emery paper. Apply a suitable primer and let it dry completely. Then apply the texture paint evenly in small sections and allow it to dry properly.

Yes, you can apply texture paint over an old painted wall. I wanted to give my old wall a new look, so I asked my painter if he could apply texture over the existing paint. He told me that it was possible, but he first needed to prepare the wall properly. Below, I have shared the detailed steps.

How can You Apply Texture Paint Over an Old Painted Wall?

  1. First, my painter carefully checked the old paint. He removed loose, peeling paint from the wall using a putty blade and emery paper. He told me that applying texture over loose paint could cause the new finish to peel later.

  2. Next, he cleaned the wall properly and removed dust, dirt, grease, and other loose materials. He made sure the surface was clean before moving on to the next step.

  3. Then, he checked the wall for cracks, holes, and small dents. Wherever he found any damage, he filled it with wall putty and levelled the surface. After the putty dried, he used emery paper to smooth the repaired areas.

  4. After preparing the wall, my painter applied a suitable primer. He explained that the primer helps the texture paint stick properly to the wall and gives an even base. He allowed the primer to dry completely before applying the texture.

  5. Once the wall was ready, he applied the texture paint using the required tools. He worked carefully in small sections and created the texture pattern evenly across the wall. I watched him apply the design and make small adjustments where needed.

  6. Finally, he allowed the texture paint to dry properly. The old painted wall looked completely different after the work was finished.

So yes, you can texture over painted walls, but proper wall preparation matters. My painter prepared the surface first, then applied the texture, which helped him get a clean, even finish.
