I remember the panic and chaos that happened at my grandparents house after realising that the property documents were missing. The whole family was frantic and they didn’t know what the hell happened. How could we lose these documents? While everybody was loosing their heads, my cousin thought he should actually start looking up about what to do if original property documents are lost. He came across a few tips and shared with the family after their failed attempt to find the documents. Here’s what followed next.

Process to follow if you lost your original property documents 

My father and chachu first went to the police station to file a missing documents report. It is important to file a police report to establish that the property papers are misplaced and a report has been filed as a response to it. This prevents you from future frauds, if anybody attempts to do it.

 

The police personnel next advised them to visit a regional and national newspaper office to publish an ad where they needed to mention that I have lost my original documents. It is done so that if anybody gets hold of the property documents, they can return them. A timeline of 15 days is given to this process.

 

After 15 days, they went to the sub registrar office along with the copy of FIR and newspaper ad to get duplicate certified copies of the original property documents. They were asked to fill form 22 which talks about lost property documents. 

They needed to submit their identity proof, police complaint, newspaper ad and any other documents that proved their ownership on the property. They were asked to make a payment for the same. 

 

Once the sub registrar office verified the claims, they issued the duplicate property documents.
