I have also faced this problem several times as I live in a rainy area. So I am quite aware of this problem and how to fix it properly. Jammed door locks can be caused by a blocked mechanism, damaged keys, corrosion, and imbalance. Depending on the condition, a jam can be fixed in a couple of moments with simple home objects. You should contact a professional or change a severely stuck lock on the door when you finish the number of quick solutions and fixes. Usually blocked locks could be repaired if you have patience, the right equipment, and are willing to put in the effort. You should know how to open a jammed door lock.

Ideas on how to open jammed lock:

1) Apply pressure on the door

You must apply force to the door while playing with the key on several ancient doors because the damaged door bends the latch at an unusual position. Try pressing up, down, towards yourself, and far from you in different directions. When the door opens, apply as much pressure as possible while maintaining the grip.

2) Apply lubricant to the lock

You can use a grease-free lube like natural graphite because the oil will cause the lock to jam even more after it dries up. One small, quick sprinkle or push inside the keyhole would be sufficient. When you're stuck in a place, just use the oil you have or wipe the key with the edge of a graphite pencil. This will help you with how to fix a door lock that is jammed.

3) Turn the key opposite ways

You just have to move the keys constantly, then turn it back in the other direction in a rapid, fluid movement, you might be able to free yourself from the jam. Even though you figure out which way to turn the key to unlock, rotating the key more toward the blocked position might indeed unjam the latch. This method can help you know how to unlock a jammed lock.

4) Use debit cards

If your door is jammed in a really bad way and you don’t even have keys to open it, try this method. You can use a debit or credit card to open the jammed door. You just have to swipe the card upside down on the door lock and it will open the jammed door. But the lock should be that kind to open it, otherwise, it won’t open.

How to open a jammed lock with key?

Before understanding how to open a door that is stuck, let us focus on why does a door knob gets jammed? Door knobs can get jammed due to conditions like temperature, humidity, wear, and tear, or a faulty door lock or latch. But as the temperature changes, the problems will go away.

However, there are times when you'll need to replace the doorknob.

The below-mentioned steps on how to open a jammed door lock from the inside and outside are as follows;

  • Give it a jiggle:

Sometimes, a little jiggle of the doorknob might free up the stuck area, especially if the issue is a straightforward one involving a small component. However, take care not to exert too much pressure or move the handle quickly as this could further damage the doorknob.

  • Use a butterknife:

Start by taking the butter knife and carefully moving it between the door and door frame to free a stuck door. Once the knife is wedged between the two, turn the handle until you hear the lock open or feel a click.

  • Remove the Door Hinges:

The door hinges can be taken off in order to unlock a jammed door. This process might require some time and effort, as well as certain tools. In order to avoid damaging the door or the frame, exercise caution when doing this.

  • Check your key:

Check the keys to your jammed lock. To identify a broken key, look for any breaks or burrs. If you have a broken key, you should also look within the keyhole to see if any broken bits are lodged in the lock.

If so, a key extractor can be used to get rid of any fragments that have broken. The broken key pieces will be extracted from the lock using a key extractor.

I hope these steps would help you with your query, how to unlock a stuck door.

I’d like to conclude my answer here about how to open a jammed door lock from the outside and inside. I’d like to highlight that do not let blocked and jammed locks obstruct your way.  If you find that your jammed door lock is beyond repair, you'll have to get a new one. I hope this helps:)

I still remember that day when I left my 2-year-old kid inside the house and was talking with a neighbour in my backyard. After few hours, I saw that the door was closed. I was yelling at my kid to open it, but he was too small to understand. I became desperate to know how to open jammed door from outside, and a few neighbours came to my aid. Let me share some of the methods we implemented.

How To Open Door When Lock Is Jammed?

Here are some methods on how to unlock a jammed door:

First, inspect the door and lock to determine the extent of the jam. Identify if it's due to a misaligned mechanism, debris, rust, or other issues. Then you can do

  • Gentle Jiggling:

Insert the key (if you have it) and gently jiggle it while applying slight pressure. Try turning the key in both directions to dislodge any stuck pins or parts within the lock.

  • Tapping:

Use a rubber mallet or a similar tool to tap the key gently while it's inserted into the lock. The vibrations might help release any stuck parts.

  • Lock Release Spray:

Use a lock release spray designed to penetrate and free up stuck locks. Follow the product instructions for the best results.

  • Credit Card Method:

Slide a thin plastic card, such as a credit card, between the door and the frame near the latch. Gently wiggle the card while turning the key to encourage the latch to release.

  • Call for Professional Help:

If all else fails, consider contacting a locksmith with the expertise and tools to handle jammed locks without damaging the door. Avoid excessive force, as it can worsen the situation.

In my case, a neighbour opened my door with a plastic card, so I highly recommend this method. Do share more methods to open a door. Since then, I have become quite dreadful, so I want to learn as many methods as I can.

If your door is stuck too then I can tell you a few methods that can be tried before you call professional help. The NoBroker carpenter was kind enough to explain these methods to us.

He told us that in this method we can try applying a small amount of graphite from a pencil or a dedicated lock lubricant into the keyhole. Then we need to gently wiggle the key while turning it to help the lubricant distribute evenly.
