  The next process is to fill any cracks or holes by applying wood putty using a putty knife. Next, sand the entire surface with sandpaper. This will help the paint adhere to the panelling.

• Caulk:

  You need to apply a paintable caulk in the gaps between the panelling planks and trim alongside the windows and doors. Let the caulk dry out.

• Priming:

  With a roller, apply a thin layer of an oil-based or water-based primer over the panelling. Use a brush to reach inside the cracks and areas where the roller can’t reach.

• Painting:

  Now, start from the topmost region and come down while painting. Complete the first coat of paint and let it dry. After the paint dries out, apply a second coat of paint.

My sister’s old house walls had wood panelling but it was completely old and damaged. So, I was thinking of painting over wall paneling to give it a new look. And what I can tell you from the results I saw at her house is that you should also consider painting your wall panels if they are old, as opposed to removing them, which might be expensive. How to paint wood paneling walls?

In certain cases, you might be able to take down the panelling and just paint the walls. However, panelling was frequently attached using both nails and adhesive, so attempting to remove the panelling could cause harm to your walls. You must be especially cautious when painting walls that have a vinyl or thin veneer finish.

Step 1: Prep Area

Tape and a drop cloth or plastic sheeting are used to cover the baseboards and crown moulding. Remove the outlet covers and switch plates.

Step 2: Wash Paneling

Using a paint roller, apply primer to the flat surfaces. Once the initial coat of primer has dried fully, if the panelling is still apparent, apply a second coat of primer. Delay the second coat's drying time.

Step 6: Paint Paneling

Using a roller to quickly smooth the surface after painting the grooves, apply the paint in the same manner as the primer. Before using the roller to smooth out the brush strokes in the grooves, take care not to let them dry.
