Which Paint Is Best For Iron Gates?

My father retired recently and has no such work to do. He recently saw one of his friends painting the grills of his house and remembered that we too have some leftover paints which can be used to paint our iron gates as well. He was not sure about the best paint for gates hence went to his friend and asked him. Uncle told my father that both oil-based or alkyd paints are good so he can use any one of them and get started with.

Our iron gate was last painted about 3 years back so my father at first started to scrub the rusty with a sand paper and since he now knew that both  oil-based or alkyd paints  are suitable, he opted for the oil-based paint since we had half a bucket of it left already. Oil-based paint will protect it from getting rusted easily and thus is a great choice.

Oil-based or alkyd paints can be used to paint any type of gates but my father said that for metal gates, it should be ensured that a primer is applied first and then only painted. Be it any gate or any paint, be sure that it gets enough light and air to dry up. 

Of course repainting can be done. One can repaint his gate anytime but in that case, a primary coat should be given be it once or twice and then only the oil-based or alkyd paint should be applied to get the best result.
