Summary
The first coat of paint applied after plastering is a primer. This primer is crucial because it seals the new plaster, prevents excessive paint absorption, and creates a smooth, even surface for the top coats. Using a primer ensures better paint adhesion, avoids uneven coloring or streaking, and can prevent the need for extra top coats. After the primer dries, the wall is ready for the application of your chosen paint, which will then go on more smoothly and evenly.

Hey. A few months ago, I decided to renovate my living room. The walls were collapsed, reconstructed, and there is a new plaster on the walls, then comes painting. I wanted to do the task myself, but I wasn’t sure how to start and what is the first coat paint after plastering, but I learnt and did it, the results were awesome.

What is the First Coat Paint on New Plaster?

I would love to share how I painted my walls and detail about the 1st coat of paint on new plaster.

  • Once I prepared the surface of the wall by cleaning and sanding, I found the 1st coat of paint on plaster is super important and it’s called the primer.

  • When I got my other rooms painted recently by some painting service, I observed and learned that the primer helps the paint stick better and creates a smooth, even surface.

  • The primer helps in sealing the plaster and prevents the paint from soaking in too much, which can lead to uneven colour or streaks.

  • After the primer dried, the surface was ready for the actual paint, and it went on much smoother and more evenly.

  • Without the primer as the first step, the new plaster tends to absorb too much paint, and I could end up using more coats than necessary.

The end result was a fresh, modern look that completely transformed the room. So, Whenever I paint any plastered walls, I don't skip the primer, it makes a huge difference. I hope my answer helped you understand about the first coat of paint on new plaster.
