To calculate paint quantity, multiply the paintable wall area by the number of coats (typically two), then divide by the paint's coverage rate. To calculate overall cost, multiply the total paintable area by the per-square-foot market pricing for your preferred paint quality, then add labor, putty, and primer.

To determine paint quantity, multiply the paintable wall area by the number of coats (usually two) and divide by the paint's coverage rate. For overall cost, multiply the total paintable area by the per-square-foot price of the chosen paint quality, adding labour, putty, and primer costs. Do both calculations before seeking quotations to catch overpriced or underpriced estimates. Below, I have shared in detail how to calculate paint quantity and painting cost before hiring a painter.

How to Calculate Paint Quantity?

Here is a simple method to calculate it:

  • Calculate the paintable area:
    • Multiply your carpet area by 3.5 to get an approximation of the total wall area.

    • To get an accurate estimate, measure the length and height of each wall and add all the wall areas.

    • Subtract the area taken up by windows and doors.

    • Add the area of the ceiling (length × breadth) if you want to paint it.

    • Lastly, factor in an additional 10% to 15% to cover waste and future touch-ups.

  • Calculate the paint quantity:
    • Verify the paint can's coverage, which is typically 100–130 square feet per litre for interior emulsion paints.

    • Find the required quantity of paint using the formula:

Paint Required = (Total Paintable Area ÷ Paint Coverage per Litre) × Number of Coats.
    • Finally, multiply the result by two, as most homes need two coats.

How to Calculate Total Painting Cost?

Depending on the finish you select, multiply the total paintable area by the painting rate:

  • Economy paints:

Rs. 12 to Rs. 18 per sq. ft.

  • Premium paints:

Rs. 19 to Rs. 30 per sq. ft.

  • Luxury paints:

Rs. 30 to Rs. 45+ per sq. ft.

  • Putty and primer would cost Rs. 4 to Rs. 10 per square foot if your walls need to be repaired.

Before selecting a painter, request a detailed quotation including carpet area, paintable area, paint brand, finish, number of coats, primer, putty, labour charges, and additional costs. Comparing multiple itemised quotes can help identify the best value instead of just the lowest price.
