I knew about built up area but not about the difference between plinth area and built up area. But after I did some digging I came to know that built-up area and plinth are used interchangeably.  I will tell you everything I know about built-up area or plinth.

The gross area of the property is referred to as the built-up area or plinth area. The house's total size includes the carpet area, wall thickness, balcony, terrace, ducts, and utility area. In essence, the built-up area is approximately 10-15 per cent larger than the house's carpet area. However, it might vary from project to project.

The built-up area can be calculated using the following formula: 

Carpet area/walkable area + Wall area = Built-up area 

Note: Walls that are shared with other units or properties are taken into account at 50%, whereas other walls of the unit are taken into account at 100%. To better understand how the built-up area is calculated, let's take a look at some of the examples below.
