What is grillage foundation?

As an interior designer, I would explain a grillage foundation as a type of foundation used to support heavy structures, especially when the soil is weak and cannot safely carry the load. It uses layers of beams arranged in a grid-like pattern to spread the building load over a larger area. This reduces the chances of excessive settlement and helps keep the structure stable. 

What are the Construction Process of Grillage Foundation?

1. First, engineers study the soil condition, building load, and site requirements. They then prepare a foundation design and decide the size and type of beams required.

2. Next, the ground is excavated to the required depth. The soil is properly levelled and compacted. A layer of sand or gravel may also be added to improve stability and drainage.

3. Then, steel or timber beams are then placed according to the design. The heavier beams are usually placed in the lower layer, while lighter beams are arranged above them in a perpendicular direction.

4. If required, additional reinforcement such as steel bars is added to provide extra strength and support.

5. Concrete may be poured around or over the grillage system, depending on the foundation design. It is then allowed to cure properly.

6. Finally, the foundation is checked for proper alignment, level, and strength. Once everything meets the required safety standards, the grillage foundation is ready to support the structure.

The type of foundation that is composed of one, two or more tiers of beams, and concrete to disperse load over an extensive area is known as grillage foundation. It is used to create columns. These tiers are enclosed in concrete and positioned at right angles. This type of construction is used for heavy structure columns, piers and scaffolds. Foundations and grillage look the same. But foundations shift load from structure to the ground. On the other hand, grillage disperses heavy loads over large areas. This is what is grillage foundation known as. Steel grillage foundation:

Steel grillage foundation is made up of steel joints and beams which contain single or double tiers. The grillage beams are positioned by 25 mm diameter pipe separators and 20 mm spacer bars. Beams are spaced at equal distances to allow the concrete to stay between them properly.

Timber grillage foundation: 

The timber grillage foundation consists of one or tiers of timber. This foundation is beneficial for water-clogged areas where the soil is weak and solid loading capacity is also limited. Timber beams or planks have no concrete between the joints of the timber. The size of the timber planks can be 20-30 cm and the width is 5-7.5 cm thick. The upper layers of the planks can be 7.5 to 10 cm. With the help of timber grillage, a masonry wall can be constructed.
