Summary
To build a versatile wardrobe, start with daily essentials for work, casual outings, travel, and other occasions. Choose easy-to-match colours such as black, white, blue, beige, grey, and denim. Focus on comfortable, well-fitting basics with multiple styling options. Use layers, shoes, bags, belts, watches, and jewellery to create different looks. Before buying, follow the three-outfit rule and avoid impulse purchases.

If you have a versatile wardrobe, then you won't need to buy anything new every time you want to mix and match your look for a particular occasion. So, if you are looking to curate such a wardrobe, start by including some basic wearables that you find comfy as well as easy to pair. Opt for shades that are easily compatible. Buy items that have multiple styling options. This will help you give an entirely new vibe to your look. I learned how to build a versatile wardrobe from my friend, an interior designer. So, I am sharing those steps below.

How Can You Build a Versatile Wardrobe?

  1. Begin with your daily necessities. Consider what you wear to work, casual outings, travel, festivals, and other regular occasions.

  2. Choose colours that are easy to match. Black, white, blue, beige, grey, and denim can be combined with a variety of different colours.

  3. Purchase useful basics. Keep simple T-shirts, shirts, jeans, trousers, kurtas, skirts, or jackets as the basis of your wardrobe.

  4. Check the fit. Select clothing that fits well and feels comfortable. You are more likely to wear them frequently.

  5. Look for many uses. A plain shirt can be worn with jeans for a casual look or trousers for a more formal occasion.

  6. Layer up. Jackets, cardigans, shrugs/overshirts help create different looks from the same outfit.

  7. Try out different shoes or accessories. You must try changing your shoes, bag, belt, watch, and jewellery to change how an item of clothing looks.

  8. Follow the ‘three outfit rule.’ Before buying anything, ask yourself if I could wear this item of clothing with three other items that I already have.

  9. Do not make impulse purchases of clothing just because it's trendy or on sale – unless you know you will wear it regularly.

  10. Choose what is comfortable and practical, considering the weather where you live.

Basically, my friend told me to buy fewer items that can be combined with each other rather than buying many items that are used individually. It will make your life easier when you get ready to wear an outfit because you can easily design new combinations out of the old ones. To get more design ideas, talk to professional designers.
