My father is associated with a construction industry. He once told me honeycombing in concrete repairing is done with grouting. Using a grout pump, the grout mixtures are pumped under pressure into the structure's cracks and voids.

What are the Steps of Fixing Honeycomb in Concrete?

I have mentioned a few crisp concrete honeycomb repair procedure;

  • Firstly, the impacted area should be cleared of any loose aggregate.

  • To get rid of fine particles and dirt, clean the concrete's surface.

  • After giving the concrete surface a thorough cleaning with water, let it dry.

  • For optimal bonding, a patch is required if the honeycomb covers a sizable area.

  • If formwork is required, install it first and then pour grout over it; if formwork is not required, apply the material directly to the damp surface.

  • To provide extra protection, apply an anti-corrosive bonding agent to the reinforcement.

  • Place grout material inside the honeycomb.

  • The manufacturer's instructions are followed for mixing and proportioning the grout material mix.

  • Use self-curing repair mortar after grouting.

  • Remove formwork in accordance with manufacturer instructions, taking into account the product type and surrounding conditions.

  • Allow the material to cure until it reaches a suitable level of durability.

These are a few steps that are followed in the construction industry on how to fix honeycomb in concrete.

My father also highlighted that construction grouts can be used to repair minor honeycombs. It is fixed by putting grout over it after bonding and anti-corrosive agents have been applied.

Hey,

I was a kid when I first noticed a honeycomb structure on a concrete wall. Unaware of what it was, I asked my father about it, who is also an architect. He explained to me what a honeycomb structure is and also told me some tricks of honeycomb concrete repair. I will walk you through it ahead.ย

Concrete that looks like honeycomb has air holes between the particles and has a rocky, rough appearance. It may happen as a result of poor prefabrication rigidity and waterproofing, excess water in the concrete mix, poor practicability and pouring practice, etc.

Get the honeycomb structure on your concrete walls analysed and repaired after proper consultation with your Interior Designers of NoBroker.

If it covers a large area, reveals the metal bars, and penetrates deeply into the concrete, honeycomb can lead to serious issues. As a result, the damaged sections need to be fixed as quickly as feasible. It not only changes the way the structural parts look, but also weakens and wears down the structure.

How to Repair Honeycomb in Concrete Structures?

The procedure for making a repair entails removing any loose pieces, cleaning the damaged area, adding the proper filler material, and afterwards curing it to give it the necessary strength.

The following steps should be followed in order to restore honeycomb in structural structures like columns and beams:

  1. Use a sledgehammer or wire brush to remove any loose concrete or loose aggregate. Avoid applying strong forces, such as those from electrical chippers, to prevent sound concrete damage near the honeycomb area.

  2. Remove any debris or dirt from the area.

  3. Prior to actually applying the repair substance, wet the cleaned area.

  4. Using only a mechanical inlet pressure pump, fill small gaps and cracks with an appropriate substance, such as epoxy grout that won't shrink.

  5. To ensure effective bonding, you might need to make a repair hole if the honeycomb spans a significant portion of the surface.

  6. If necessary, set up formwork before pouring the grout.

  7. Apply a suitable repair material, including such non-shrinkage, high-strength grout, if formwork is not utilised.

  8. If the depth of the honeycombing is larger than 5 cm, the filling operation should be done in a layer that is 15 mm thick. It is advised to hold off before adding the following layer.

  9. The strength of the repaired concrete should be equivalent to that of the original structural member.

  10. Maintain aesthetics by providing the necessary texture and colour to blend in with the surrounding concrete.

  11. Depending on what type of product is used and the surrounding environment, eliminate formworks within 12 hours of restoration if they are present. Cure the repair material until it is sufficiently strong.

These are the tips of my father and an architect about

honeycomb concrete repair. I hope you find them helpful.
