Summary
To clean an oil stain from a sofa, first blot the extra oil with a dry cloth. Apply baking soda for 15–20 minutes and then remove it. Clean the area gently with mild dish soap and warm water. Dab with a clean damp cloth to remove soap and let the sofa dry naturally. Avoid rubbing the stain.

A few days ago, my child accidentally spilled oil on our sofa. I cleaned it immediately, and the process was very easy. I used a dry cloth and baking soda to remove the oil stain. If you also face the same problem, do not worry. You can try this simple cleaning method at home. Below, I have shared the steps on how to clean oil from sofa properly.

What is the Step-By-Step Process To Clean Oil From A Sofa?

  1. First, take a clean tissue or dry cloth and gently press the stained area. This will help remove the extra oil. Do not rub the stain because the oil can spread to a larger area.

  2. Next, take some baking soda and put it over the oil stain. Leave it for around 15 to 20 minutes. The baking soda will help absorb the oil from the sofa.

  3. After that, remove the baking soda using a vacuum cleaner or a soft brush.

  4. Now, take a small bowl and mix a little mild dishwashing liquid with warm water. Dip a clean cloth into this mixture and squeeze out the extra water. The cloth should only be slightly wet.

  5. Gently dab the stained area with the cloth. Start from the outer part of the stain and move towards the centre. Avoid rubbing the sofa too hard.

  6. After cleaning, take another clean cloth, wet it slightly with plain water, and dab the area again to remove any soap.

  7. Finally, allow the sofa to dry naturally. Keep the area well-ventilated and avoid sitting on it until it is fully dry.

If the stain is still there, you can consider professional sofa cleaning instead of using strong chemicals at home.
