Yes, you can apply emulsion paint on a whitewashed wall, but you must prepare the wall properly first. Good preparation helps the new paint stick well and prevents peeling or cracking later.

  1. First, clean the wall. Whitewash often leaves a loose powder on the surface. Use a brush, cloth, or scraper to remove any loose whitewash. You can also scrub the wall gently with water and let it dry completely. This step removes dust and weak material from the wall.

  2. Next, test the wall surface. Rub your hand across the wall. If your hand becomes very white and powdery, the surface is still weak. In that case, you should clean the wall again until most of the powder disappears. A clean and firm surface helps the paint stick better.

  3. After cleaning, apply a sealer or bonding agent. Many people use a PVA solution to seal the surface. You can mix one part PVA with five parts water and apply it evenly on the wall. This mixture seals the porous whitewash and creates a stronger surface for painting.

  4. Then apply a mist coat. A mist coat is a thin first layer of paint. Mix the matt emulsion paint with water and apply it evenly. This coat helps the paint soak into the surface and improves bonding.

  5. Finally, apply the normal emulsion paint. After the mist coat dries, apply one or two coats of full-strength emulsion paint. Allow each coat to dry before adding the next one.

If you follow these steps carefully, the emulsion paint will stick well and give the wall a smooth, long-lasting finish. I hope this helps you.

Recently, I planned to whitewash the walls of my house to give it a more clean look. After a while, I started thinking if I can also apply emulsion paint on the whitewashed walls without affecting the adhesion of the paint. So I researched can we apply emulsion paint on whitewash walls. I found out you can actually apply emulsion paint over whitewashed walls if you prepare ahead of time and use high-quality products.

How can We Apply Emulsion Paint on Whitewash Wall Ceiling?

I was worried about the emulsion\'s ability to adhere to the whitewash. During research, here is the process I came across.

  • Start by carefully washing the walls to get rid of any dust or oil in order to get ready. Any residue can affect the adhesion of the paint, thus this step is important.

  • After that, give the walls a little sanding to give them a rougher surface for improved grip.

  • When painting over previously painted or bleached surfaces, I found this method was frequently advised.

  • To lighten your space, use a premium emulsion paint in a gentle pastel shade.

  • After thoroughly mixing it, apply it with a roller, brush the edges and corners.

  • Allowing enough drying time between coatings was one tip I learnt during this process. This helps prevent peeling later on and guarantees improved adherence.

I hired a painter to do the job. Since my whitewash was very light, he said two layers were required for even covering. Once completed, my walls completely changed the look of my space. I hope you found this helpful.
