It was in the 1920s in the city of New York after World War I that the overall infrastructure began to improve. Engineers and architects of the time decided to use this opportunity to reinvent the top-most floor of buildings, turning them into beautiful apartments with enormous windows, and terraces that combined gardens to comfortably isolate an individual from the busy city below. It was in 1922-‘23 in fact, that Emery Roth (renowned for architecting iconic buildings including the Ritz Tower, Mayflower Hotel, The El Dorado and many more) developed the fifteen storeyed twin towers. This building was the world’s tallest from 1971 to ’73, and the original World Trade Centre before it was destroyed by the September 11 attacks – leading to the coinage of the term ‘penthouse’ in Roth’s biography.
