Yes, putty is applied on exterior walls to create a smooth, crack-free surface, protect plaster, and increase the longevity of paint. But it must be exterior-grade waterproof and specially formulated to withstand rain, UV rays, humidity, and temperature variations.

Definitely yes. Wall putty is required for exterior walls in most cases (especially for most new construction and repainting projects). Here are the principles of exterior putty application for the best result:
  • Select a cement-based or acrylic waterproof putty suited to exterior walls.
  • Before applying the product, thoroughly clean and mildly dampen the surface.
  • Dry each application for 6-8 hours before applying primer and weatherproof exterior paint.
  • Apply one or two thin coats, keeping the overall thickness around 1.5 mm. Excessively thick layers may peel or crack.

Yes, putty is applied on exterior walls to create a smooth, crack-free surface, protect plaster, and increase the longevity of paint. But it must be exterior-grade waterproof and specially formulated to withstand rain, UV rays, humidity, and temperature variations. Below, I have shared why is putty required for exterior walls.

Why Use Putty on Exterior Walls?

  1. Enhances paint finish: It enhances paint adhesion, reduces consumption, and delivers a smoother, more uniform colour.

  2. Improves water resistance: Waterproof white cement-based putties help to keep moisture out, lowering the risk of damp patches, peeling, and paint failure.

  3. Minimises minor cracks: A thin putty layer prevents surface cracks by allowing for slight thermal expansion and contraction.

Rest benefits you can check from Parminder S’s answer.

When Can You Skip Exterior Wall Putty?

Putty is not necessary for all projects. If the external plaster is already smooth, well-cured, and ready for painting, you can skip the putty and simply apply an exterior primer followed by paint.

This also eliminates issues caused by low-quality putty or improper application. Exterior walls do not require the ultra-smooth finish of interior walls. Thus, minimal putty is generally sufficient. Hope I answered all of your queries.

No, putty is not required for the exterior wall of your house. Putty helps smooth the base surface of walls and prepares them for painting. It also affects how long the paint and the wall will last. However, putty is not required for all exterior walls. You should use it only when the wall condition demands it.

Is Putty Required for Exterior Walls in India?

No. If the exterior wall is already smooth and strong, you can skip putty. In such cases, you can directly apply a primer and then paint. This saves cost and avoids problems caused by low-quality putty or poor application. Exterior walls do not need to be as smooth as interior walls, so heavy putty use is not always necessary.

  1. You can skip apply putty in old buildings under renovation if the wall surface is solid and even. You can also skip it in self-built houses if you prefer a rough or natural finish. In these cases, using a good waterproof exterior paint is enough.

  2. When you decide to use putty, always apply it in a thin layer. Thick layers can crack during drying. Choose high-quality exterior wall putty for better strength and durability. Exterior putty usually contains cement and polymer materials to improve bonding and weather resistance.

  3. For rough or uneven walls, regular putty may not work well. You should use coarse levelling putty to fill large gaps. In modern exterior insulation systems or textured paint finishes, special strong or flexible putty helps reduce paint usage and covers small cracks.

So, putty is helpful, but not always required for exterior walls. Use it wisely based on the wall condition. Hope now you know if putty is required for exterior walls or not.

Before getting my exterior painted, I got in touch with a painter and asked him is putty required for exterior walls. The painter told me that it's not necessary to use putty on the exterior walls unless there are any small cracks or pores in the walls. I asked him to come by and check if my exterior walls need putty or not.

Can We Apply Putty on Exterior Wall?

The painter came by and checked the exterior walls of my house, and after that, he informed me that there were a few cracks present there. Here are the steps that he followed to apply putty on my exterior walls.

  • He started by removing all the loosely adhering materials, like dirt, dust, etc.

  • Next, he used a hose spray to moisten the wall before applying the putty.

  • After that, he mixed the putty with water to make a paste and then left it for a few minutes.

  • Following that, he started applying the putty very gently with a putty blade.

  • After applying the putty, he waited for 3 - 4 hours to apply the next coat.

This is what he told me when I asked him can we apply wall putty in exterior wall or not. I hope this helps.
