Summary
To stain a fence, first clean the surface with a garden hose and bleach. Then, apply an exterior oil-based, semi-transparent wood stain using a medium-sized brush, pad, or roller. Work from top to bottom with small, quick strokes for an even finish. You can apply a second coat if needed, ensuring the fence dries completely between applications. For a deeper clean before staining, a power washer and wood stain stripper can be used, and sanding may also be necessary. An airless sprayer can be an alternative application method.
