Are sunken living rooms making a comeback?

I went on my first international holiday in the year 2018. We booked an AirBnB for a week. The experience was amazing. I was fascinated by the interiors of the home and never had I experienced such a unique arrangement in the living room area. There was a huge hall with a seating in the middle where you could climb down a couple of stairs and find yourself a comfortable spot. I asked the house manager what it was and he told me that it was a 70s sunken living room. The name made much more sense with the whole setting. I was intrigued so I asked him a few questions, and he was patiently answering each one of them. Let me tell you what I learnt that day. 

When I asked him in detail, he told me that although the sunken living rooms came in around the 1920s, it was around the 60s and 70s that they became quite popular. Back in the day, people who had open space and large halls preferred an intimate space with sunken living rooms.

• Provides intimate and private space

• Adds to the overall character of the home

• People are prone to suffer minor accidents if they don’t pay attention

In the west, there is a slight shift and sunken living rooms have started coming back but the reasons for the same are: popularity of open floor plans and inability to raise the roof. And of course we know that things come back so it’s not a surprise that this style of home construction is making a slight comeback anyway.

Nonetheless, this is what i learnt about 70s sunken living room. I hope I was able to give you a satisfactory response.
