Interior Design Tips & Ideas

Around five thousand years ago, nomadic cultures began weaving rugs out of stalks and grasses, and they've been a staple of interior design ever since. Carpets are typically overlooked in the design of a home, but their softness, absorption of noise, and ability to insulate the interior contribute to saving heating costs. Apart from their practical use, carpets may completely transform a room by harmonising the colour scheme and bringing in an additional dimension, depth, and flair. For another reason, a living room rug is rarely overlooked by interior designers because they set limits and define zones, allowing for the much-needed R&R in a designated location.

Using exquisite flatweave, a Kilim runner, or a striped statement rug are just some ways in which designers continue to demonstrate that carpets are more than just things that serve a functional purpose. A rug with a vibrant, patterned design can bring out the colours in the backdrop and give a dash of liveliness to a room with a usually minimalist style. On the other hand, an old Persian or Moroccan rug—both perennial favourites among interior designers—can raise the stakes and add drama to any room. Have a vision for a total overhaul of your home? A new rug may make a massive difference in the appearance of your living area.

Choosing the perfect rug carpet for the living room can be challenging because there are so many options available in terms of patterns, styles, colours, materials, and sizes. For your benefit, we've compiled a list of some of the most famous living room rug designs and answers to your questions on how to choose one.

Why is it Necessary to Have a Rug?

Living Room Rugs
(credits: m.media-amazon.com ) You can opt for some fluffy living room rug in soft greys to balance out the beauty of rustic bedrooms

Because modern homes do not come with carpeting, many folks who relocate into a new residence consider purchasing rugs for their floors as an option for decorating their new space. Choosing the best rugs for the living room can seem like a no-brainer regarding the room's aesthetics.

In decor, there is nothing more versatile than the rug. A total multi-tasker, it may enhance your style and hide your flaws all at once. Indeed, we are adamant everybody should have at least one rug, and we'll explain why.

Add Some Light to a Dark Space

Laminated floors or hardwood flooring come in a variety of colours, making them a popular choice in contemporary homes. Light loss can be severe in situations where there are no windows.

Lighter-coloured runner rugs look well with this sort of flooring because they provide the appropriate combination of opulence and a sense of space. In a conventional patterned rug, such as this one, using off-whites helps keep it looking clean while still keeping it bright.

Adding a light-coloured rug to a dark space will brighten things up. While this geometric pattern isn't particularly complex, the vivid orange accents really make it stand out. Place a light rug over a dark one to lighten up your living room.

Rugs have the advantage of being versatile in their application. Moving to a new location doesn't mean you can't take your belongings with you. To reflect the changing weather or for any other purpose, they are great for those who want a change in their home's decor.

It's All Zoned Out

Living Room Rugs

Open floor plans are all the rage in residential construction right now, but the question remains: how can one create separate rooms in a place that lacks walls? That's where the practicality of area rugs comes into play. Rugs can readily connect or divide a room in the same way that they can do any of those things.

Large area rugs can be utilised in your living room, dining area, patio, bedroom and any other space to demarcate specific regions of the room and secure your furniture. The carpets contribute to the establishment of discrete boundaries and serve to transform a single ample space into multiple unique living areas.

Improve Security

Do you lose your cool every time your adorable child trips and falls while learning to walk? Using a rug as a landing pad will safeguard your child's sensitive head, knees, and hands during this most critical era of their life.

To prevent falls and accidents, rugs are perfect for cushioning our footsteps. All family members, but especially children and the elderly, are safeguarded by this device.

To prevent slips and falls, you should use carpets in your home. If you have small children and live in a house with a lengthy corridor, installing a runner can help prevent accidents. Rugs can also cover up slippery areas on floors that have been cleaned to prevent people from tripping and falling.

Absorbs the Most of the Noise and Gives You Peace

The capacity of rugs to absorb sound is one of the most practical benefits of these floor coverings. If there are echoes in your home, or you have the impression that talks can be heard throughout the house, you should add area rugs to your shopping list for home design as soon as possible.

The richer, plusher and thicker your rug is, the better it will absorb sound and lower the overall volume of the room's ambient noise. This applies to all kinds of sounds, including voices and loud footfall, two of the most common sources of distraction.

Enhance The Problem Areas

If you have a problem with your floor, such as damaged tiles, a simple solution is to cover it up with a rug. These carpets should complement and harmonise with the rest of the room's decor. Rugs, however, are yours to keep if you decide to move out of your current home.

Carpeting the area around an unattractive stain or blemish might be an excellent way to hide it. However, you should notify your landlord if any floor section is damaged. Tripping risks on floors should be repaired rather than just covered over to prevent accidents.

Even if you're renting, you'll want your place to look its best so that you can show it off to potential employers. Renting a home with defective floors can save you money. Rugs are a terrific way to disguise any flaws in your floors and give them a more luxurious appearance.

Comfy? That's what we're talking about!

Do you have hardwood or tile flooring across the entire space? Moving about on such hard surfaces can be a little uneasy and chilly, especially when walking. The addition of plush rugs will swiftly elevate the appearance of your floors from unremarkable to magnificent. Your home will feel much cosier and more welcoming if you install a runner or an area rug in your hallway and living room.

Let's Get This Room Together.

Rugs are often said to be a room's "final touch" because of this belief. If you're starting with decorating, a carpet is a terrific place to start because it may provide you with an excellent colour pallet. In the living room, an area rug can delineate a conversation space, a sitting area in an office, or a dining area.

Rooms with no walls can be partitioned and marked off by placing them on carpeted floors. Rugs can also give a visual layer, allowing space to go from cold and gloomy to warm and vibrant in an instant.

Every size, colour, pattern, and material combination imaginable is available in the world of area rugs. It's easy to identify the rug as the focal point of your home, or you can use it to harmonise your colour choices.

Which Kind of Rugs Are the Best Fit for Your Living Room?

Living Room Rugs
(credits: decoratedlife.com) It is always a good idea to pair ethnic printed light rugs with hard laminated wooden floors

Depending on where your rug will be used and how much wear and tear it will be subjected to, the ideal sort of rug to purchase is determined. There are two types of pile lengths: long and short. Longer piles are better for smaller rugs that fit neatly under coffee tables, while short bundles are better for covering your living room floor. Flatweave carpets like jute can withstand a lot of activity and won't reveal scuff marks or stains, making them easier to clean.

What Is the Right Place for an Area Rug in the Living Room?

Living Room Rugs
(credits: thearchitecturedesigns.com) You can use Living room floor rugs in various prints to restrict certain areas of your living room

In a living room, an area rug should be placed in the middle of the room. Keep an equal amount of flooring exposed on all four sides. It's essential to place your area rug so that your furniture rests partially on top of it and to make sure that it covers any walkways or areas with high activity.

How to Decide on the Right Rug Size for Your Living Room?

Living Room Rugs
(Credits: m.media-amazon.com) Always make sure to leave out at least a few inches from the wall to avoid giving the illusion of wall-to-wall carpeting

We completely get it! A living room rug is a large and expensive piece of furniture, and who wants to go back and return a carpet? Nobody. So, if you're in the market for a new rug for your living room or want to change things up a bit, we hope these algorithms can help.

Boarding With All You have

Living Room Rugs
(Credits: stylebyemilyhenderson.com) Even for small living spaces, it is essential to leave out some room around the surrounding walls

A good rule of thumb is to leave around 8 inches between the edge of your furniture and the rug if you have a big enough area and want to put everything on the carpet, such as your sofa, accent chairs, coffee table, etc. Using this method, your furniture will not look like a youngster on a subway station.

Then, if you have the room, let yourself anything from 10 inches to 18 inches, or even 24 inches, between the rug and the wall. Though you get too close to your rug, it will take over your room and appear as if it is "almost" wall-to-wall carpeting.

If your sofa is a few inches away from a wall, these guidelines don't apply. You can get closer to your rug so you don't squander space in the common area.

Cover Only a Mini Part of It, And Allow the Rest to Flow.

Living Room Rugs
(Credits: stylebyemilyhenderson.com) Living room rugs modern in multicolour patterns can be displayed partially what with the furniture around

This design is perhaps the most popular in this region, if not the entire world. Even if all of your furniture gets to "play," each piece has the freedom to exist as an individual. The front legs of the sofa and all the chairs should rest on this one. The rug isn't the only safe place in this game of "Floor is lava." Make room for those hind legs by hanging them off.

While it may not be accurate, this design will give the illusion of more space in a small area. The rug should cover roughly one-third of the width of each piece. You should keep your carpet at least 7 inches under your chair if it is 21 inches wide.

The Float, Queen of Disobedience

Living Room Rugs
(credits:alrasub.com) Coir-based modern living room rugs can help invite farmhouse chic in style

Making this layout look good is possible, but you'll have to be cautious. To begin, what does the term "float" refer to? The rug is under the coffee table, but not the chairs.

The rug police aren't going to show up if you have a genuinely fantastic rug that barely misses your sofa and chairs. There should be no more than a 5-inch space between your couch and rug. One more millimetre will appear far too small, which will undoubtedly make you and your living space feel miserable.

Best Living Room Rug Designs for Your Living Room

Living Room Rugs

Don't underestimate the power of a rug. This collection of living room rug design ideas demonstrates exactly how transformative they are:

1. Contemporary Asymmetric Kilim Rug for the Living Room

Living Room Rugs
(credits:cdn.shopify.com) Kilim rugs are lightweight, easily washable and come in a lot of quirky prints

Kilim rugs are an excellent choice for use in informal living areas due to their lightweight and ease of manipulation when cleaning or rearrangement. This chic design keeps things straightforward by utilising woven wool in a natural tone, which is then embellished along one side with geometric dashes of red. This rug is a powerful statement piece, thanks to its asymmetrical balance.

2. Make patterns by combining Blue and Orange

4. Bring in the Discoloured Tones in your living space

Living Room Rugs
(credits: www.instagram.com) Faded style rugs for living room India in paisley or Rajasthani motifs are a subtle way to add some colour to a white living room

The term "faded colour" may sound like a euphemism, but it's a simple method to add a touch of subdued colour that might otherwise be lost in a living room or be too distracting. Choose colours that are present elsewhere in your living room, such as on the furniture or the accessories, to make this style work in your area.

5. Fluffy And Cosy Faux Sheepskin Rug for Living Room

If you want your living room to have the feel of a Tibetan retreat, selecting a rug with an alluring wave pattern is the best option to consider. The living area maintains a masculine and open feel thanks to the earthy tones of the furniture and the white walls surrounding it.

16. When It Comes to Elegance and Neutrality, White Is Always in Style.

Living Room Rugs
(Credits: hips.hearstapps.com) Whites are always in fashion when it comes to minimalistic living room rugs

Regarding architecture, minimalism that blends in with its environment is known as regional modernism. A wool rug grounds a contemporary living room decorated in the manner of Miami Beach with neutral tones and a bespoke design. The interior design incorporates modern and pop sensibilities to create a joyful atmosphere.

17. Put A Statement Rug in Place

Living Room Rugs
(Credits: m.media-amazon.com) The perfect way to add in some quirk to minimalist living rooms

It's okay to keep the rest of your decor basic when you have a statement rug. Still, you may want to incorporate the rug's colours into other elements of your décor, such as cushions, curtains, or other fittings and accessories.

Alternatively, if your furniture is arranged the way you want it, you might want to finish off the room by adding a living room area rug that coordinates with it or is neutral in colour. For an extra touch of luxury, you might select a rug with an inviting texture or a silky finish. Mix traditional rugs with more contemporary pieces, or the other way around - it may look great both ways.

How to Care for Your Living Room Rug

Living room area rugs are a beautiful addition to any home. Not only do they add texture and warmth to your living room, but they also serve as a functional piece that ties the room together. However, to ensure that your modern carpets for living room or soft rugs for living room last a long time, it's important to know how to care for them properly. Here are some tips on how to do just that.

Vacuum Your Rug Regularly

One of the easiest ways to care for your living room rug is by vacuuming it regularly. This will help remove any dust or dirt that has accumulated on the rug. Make sure to use a vacuum with a beater bar or a rotating brush to get deep into the fibers of the rug. For best results, vacuum your rug at least once a week.

NoBroker Tip: If you're too busy to clean your living room rug, NoBroker offers cleaning services that include professional cleaning and maintenance of your rugs and carpets for living room.

Rotate Your Rug

To prevent wear and tear on one side of the rug, it's important to rotate it every few months. This will also help to ensure that the rug wears evenly. If you have a luxury carpet for living room, this is especially important as it can help to maintain its quality and appearance.

Blot Spills Immediately

If you spill something on your living room rug, it's important to blot it up immediately. Use a clean cloth to gently blot the spill until it's absorbed. Don't rub the spill as this can cause it to spread and make the stain worse. If the spill has left a stain, you can use a carpet cleaner specifically designed for your type of rug.

NoBroker Tip: If you're not sure which luxury carpets for living room to use, NoBroker's interior décor experts can recommend the best rugs for living room and provide tips on how to choose carpet for living room.

Protect Your Rug from Sunlight

Direct sunlight can cause the colours in your living room rug to fade over time. To prevent this, it's important to protect your rug from direct sunlight. You can do this by closing curtains or blinds during the sunniest parts of the day or by placing your rug in a shaded area of the room.

Use Rug Pads

Using a rug pad underneath your floor carpet for living room can help to prevent slipping and sliding. It can also help to protect your rug from wear and tear caused by furniture or heavy foot traffic.

We are sure these living room rugs can uplift the look of any simple living space. Whether you want sweet florals or the bold Mediterranean is totally up to you! Stuck while designing your home? Contact the NoBroker interior design team for expert advice on decor and furnishings. We are always happy to help!

Frequently Asked Questions

-1 Is it necessary to have rugs that match the flooring?toggle icon
A-1 Your area rug will make a statement in your carpeted room if you modify how, it appears and feels. Make use of colours that are complementary or similar. The colour of your area rug shouldn't clash with the rest of your decor, especially if it's placed on top of a carpet.
-2 With a hardwood floor, how do you choose the right rug?toggle icon
A-2 Deep royal hues like purple, scarlet, blue, and green work well with light wood floors. Another way to make your wood flooring stand out is to choose rugs with varying tones of the same colour. Consider the existing room's design and furnishings when making your selections.
-3 When is it not okay to use a rug?toggle icon
A-3 In a small studio, or a room with visual borders, you may not want to utilise rugs to divide the space further. The area will appear more spacious and open if the floor is free of carpets. A drug-free living room makes a studio apartment feel much larger than it is.
-4 Is it possible for a rug to be huge for a living room?toggle icon
A-4 Depending on the size of an area rug, a room's appearance can be substantially altered. You don't want a rug too small for your room because it might make it feel cold and sterile. Conversely, a rug that is too huge for space might make the area appear smaller.
-5 Why do we place carpets under our dining tables?toggle icon
A-5 The addition of a rug beneath your dining room table can help unify the space. Depending on the colour and design of the dining room, it might provide a dynamic element to the area. Adding a rug to the room doesn't have to be a one-size-fits-all endeavour.

We are happy with the overall experience with NoBroker, especially with respect to the quality of work delivered. However, the pricing is slightly on the higher side compared to the market. We would especially like to appreciate the efforts of the Project Managers, Mr. Tabrez Pasha and Mr. Harsha, for their continuous support and coordination throughout the process. The development team has been very responsive and proactive in rectifying issues promptly whenever customers identify and report them, including support for replacements. However, maintaining timelines often required continuous follow-ups from our side. We request the team to improve proactive timeline management and adherence to committed schedules. A special thank you to Mr. Tabrez Pasha for providing daily updates to the customer, supporting even small modifications, and maintaining continuous interaction and coordination throughout the project. Overall, thank you to the entire team for the support and cooperation.
