Ever envied your neighbour's flora-rich green balcony full of expensive designer planters and pots? Ever wished you could get your hands on such beautiful pots? Well, now you can- at half the price! Here are a few innovative ideas for flower pot designs.

Plants are a major part of our life, and any home decor idea without their presence is incomplete. In addition to the care and pampering - plants need to thrive and not just survive. They must also have a decorated place for themselves to spend their lives as placidly as possible to show off their beauty.

Yes, you guessed it right, we are talking about flower pot design ideas. Decorating pots are an add-on to the beauty of your home decor and also helps you to display your artistic side to the world while adding an element of fun to your stressful lifestyle.

After decades of traditional clay and ceramic flower pots painted with different motifs, today, we have the opportunity to delight ourselves with avant-garde and functional designs worthy of occupying a place in a museum. Product designers have put this everyday container in the spotlight by giving it new shapes, materials and a finishing twist to transform it into a designer piece. Some even facilitate their plant care routine with sophisticated drip systems ideal for those less skilled in the art of botany.

This article brings you some creative flower pot design ideas that are not expensive but are perfect to spruce up your home. Whether it's indoors or outdoors, you will be amazed by how a few brushstrokes and a little bit of hard work can completely alter the look and feel of your home.

14 Creative and Innovative Flower Pot Designs Ideas

Flowers planted in designer flower pots are an absolute delight in any house. They bring a lot of positive energy to your space and also good visual aesthetics. We all have bought cheap terracotta flower pots from exhibitions or fairs. But with time, we get bored of the brick colour of the pots! After all, minimalism is not everyone's cup of tea!

Do you know you can use everyday plastic items to make unique pots and planters? Or maybe use that empty jar of nuts you got as a gift last Diwali? Your flower pots will stand out in any space inside or outside the house, with a bit of artistic touch. You can use a wide range of materials like marbles, shells, ropes and yes, even PVC pipes! Excited? Let's see the different ways to make a unique flower pot design.

1. Plastic Bottle Flower Pot Designs

Waste bottles reused as bright hanging planters

Plastic is a beautiful and environmentally friendly idea for flower pots, especially if you are on a budget. You can use any PET bottle for this. Too many cold drink bottles? How about repurposing them as table planters? Here's what you can do:

  1. Take a 500 ml PET bottle or any transparent plastic bottle.
  2. Cut it into two halves. That way, you get two planters for yourself.
  3. Fill the planters with potting soil and plant whatever you want.
  4. Make several of them and leave them hanging by the balcony or any space you think is suitable.

If this seems too simple, we have one more plastic flower pot design with colour. Make lots of these to give that pop of colour to your garden.

Painted oil cans and jars used as window grill planters

  1. Choose non-transparent plastic bottles for this design. Empty oil jars or milk cans will do.
  2. Make a clean cut at the base of the bottle. Keep the mouth of the bottle with the cap intact.
  3. Let your imagination run wild! If you have kids, involve them in this process and let them paint and draw whatever they want! You can use acrylic paints for this.
  4. Fill in the planter with potting soil and plant the sapling.
  5. Hang them wherever you like!

2. Handmade Flower Pot Designs

Wrap large ropes tightly around terracotta pots to make an exciting flower pot design. Make sure to wrap it so that no part of the terracotta colour can be seen. Ideally, you can use both natural and coloured ropes layered on each other to give it more texture and contrast.

Sand texture pot with shells kept in balcony corner
Sand and shells give pots a beach style feel

You can go for crocheted designs too. Knit some crochets the size of your flower pots and put them on! You will see an instant difference. You can make a bow with ribbons in contrasting colours to make it cuter.

Are you missing the warmth of the seaside? Bring the coast to your home by using sand. Buy some cheap terracotta pots from the local store and get going! Paste glue all over your pot, and then roll it in grainy sand, leave it to dry and repeat the process. Once the sand covers the pot uniformly, stick some shells with a superglue. You can also use a sealant.

3. Creative Flower Pot Designs

Napkin art turns plain pots into decor pieces

Have some leftover paper napkins from the party last night? If it has pretty motifs, then we have got good news for you! You can use them to decorate your humble cement/terracotta pots. Cut out the motifs. Spread the rest of the napkin evenly across the pot, and then fix the beautiful motifs with clear art glue.

Soft gold touch adds charm to simple pots

Add a bit of gold to your flower pot design to make it stand out. First, use acrylic pastel colours to paint the flower pot. Then, create contrast by adding gold glitter or finish off with a slight essence of matte gold paint. If you wish, you can paint the whole pot gold and top it off with a transparent shiny coating.

4. Flower Pot Designs for the Outdoors

If you are blessed with a garden, here are a few more innovative ways to deck up those pesky plant pots! Let's take a look at them:

  • Love curio shops and antiques? Why not bring in some of that vintage charm to your garden? Shabby chic is here to stay! Apply grey or charcoal grey chalk paints and see your cheap plant pots transform into Victorian style planters. Keep some of those on your porch and watch your guests in awe of them!
Stone texture painted pots along compound wall plants
Stone finish pots blend with outdoor surroundings
  • You can also paint your flower pots by giving it a stony finish. This flower pot design works very well with brick walls and rocky henges/pavements. Large planters made from stone also work well outdoors.

5. Big Flower Pot Design

If you are up for some adventure, then try designing flower pots with the help of wooden pallets. Customise the wood pallets into the measurement you need and then align them vertically creating a stable shape. Pin the wooden boards with screws and nails. Your rustic flower pot is ready!

Mosaic tile covered PVC pipe planter in balcony

Another creative flower pot idea is to recycle PVC pipes! Interesting right? Let's see the steps:

  1. Gather some PVC pipes left as residues after any plumbing work. Different sized tubes would be perfect for creating a uniform design.
  2. Pick out a selection of broken mosaic cubes and ceramic tiles. Make sure to choose pieces that are small and complement each other.
  3. All you have to do is arrange and stick them with the help of a mosaic or tile adhesive.

6. Cement Flower Pot Design

Turn ordinary concrete/cement flower pots into expensive-looking planters with the help of acrylic paints. Choose a background colour, and then you can add polka dots, motifs or whatever you like.

7. Wallflower Pot Design

Got an empty wall that looks drab all the time? Grab some cheap metal or plastic jugs, repaint them in any solid/pastel colour you like and use them as planters! Your drab wall is now the most beautiful corner of your home! If you want a more earthy look, copper jugs work well too.

8. Small Flower Pot Design

Not everyone has a lot of space in their home. In that case, we invest in small flower pots that don't take up much space. Miniature decorative planters are an absolute delight and can brighten up any corner of your home. You can paint them in any colour and stamp/write cute messages on them! It's personal and makes for a great gift too!

9. Best Glass Flower Pot Design

Glass is timeless and effortless. Grow a money plant in a round glass bowl, and you will see what we are talking about! Whether you are growing flowers or simple basil, glass flower pots are great as they are! But you can always let your imaginations loose by etching or painting on the glass.

Terrariums are also great options for glass flower pots. For this, you will need gravel, coloured pebbles (or get a few pebbles and paint on it) and small knick-knacks that can be added to create a story. Fun, right?

10. Hanging Flower Pot Design

Hanging pots save space and add greenery

A shortage of floor space? Hang your planters in any open space, preferably near the windows and the veranda. Flowers and vine creepers are plants that go the best with a hanging flower pot design.

11. Corner Flower Pot Design

Flower pots can either be big or small - depends on your choice. You can decorate your flower pots with any of the designs mentioned above. The key is to place your plants in strategic corners so as to be highlighted, and also for them to get enough sunlight. Note how bamboo baskets, glass tubes, and traditional style pots have been used together to highlight the corner in the picture above.

12. Bamboo Flower Pot Design

Bamboo cut pieces used as natural wall planters
Bamboo planters give earthy balcony feel

Bamboos are an ideal plant container that lends an earthy touch to any room. If you are a fan of the natural vibe, then go for bamboo planters. You can cut a section within the bamboo slat or use slightly larger bamboo sections as planters. Hang them up against a drab wall/surface and see your space change its feel.

13. Artificial Flower Pot Design

If you don't have the time for potting and planting, you can also use artificial flowers to decorate your space. Small plastic planters will serve the purpose. Buy a wooden board or slate-like the one above and arrange your little planters on it. Sounds easy, right?

14. Simple Flower Pot Design

Now we understand that not everyone has the luxury of time. In that case, simply labelling your plants in bright notes or paper will help. If possible, ask your kids to draw some cute motifs in chalk paint. These are perfect for small and quaint balconies.

Plants and flowers bring a lot of positive energy to your space and purify the circulating air.
