/Your site is measured, your requirements are reviewed, and a Designer is assigned to your project, all before you sit down for your first real design conversation. Nothing about that first conversation starts from zero. Here's exactly what happens, step by step, and what you should walk in with.

Prepare

Before the meeting, it helps to have three things sorted in your head, even roughly.

  • Your actual requirement. How many rooms need work, whether this is a full home or specific spaces, and what's driving the project: a new possession, an upgrade to an existing home, or simply wanting a better-functioning space.
  • References and specifications. Photos you've saved, finishes you like, a layout you've seen somewhere that worked well. This is effectively the start of your moodboard, and it doesn't need to be polished; screenshots on your phone are enough.
  • Must-haves. The things you're not willing to compromise on. A modular kitchen with soft-close storage falls here if you cook daily, or a specific storage layout if space is tight.
  • Nice-to-haves. The things you'd like but can flex on if the budget needs it, a particular accent wall finish, for instance. Walking in with this distinction already made means your team can prioritize effectively if trade-offs come up later, rather than guessing what matters most to you.

Measure

Your site is measured before your first proper design conversation.

Your initial quotation is based on the floor plan you shared earlier, from your builder, and that's a useful starting point, but it isn't accurate enough to design against. Real properties differ slightly from paper: a wall that's a few inches off, a beam that isn't marked, a plumbing point in a different spot than shown. Once your project moves from Sales to the Design team, your Salesperson schedules a Site Measurement, and a Design Associate from the Measurement Team visits your property to take precise, detailed measurements. Only the Design Associate visits for this; you're welcome to join if you'd like.

This produces a Site Measurement Report, and a base 3D model gets built from these updated numbers. A Designer is then formally assigned to your project, and before you even meet them, they sit through a Pre-Onboarding Meeting with the Salesperson or Design Consultant who's already spoken with you, reviewing your quotation, requirements and everything discussed so far. By the time you actually sit down with your Designer, your space has already been measured accurately and your background is already on their radar.

Discuss

Your first real meeting with your Designer is called the Onboarding Meeting. Here, they walk you through how the process ahead will work, the stages coming up, expected timelines, and what's needed from you along the way.

From here, 2 to 3 Design in Progress sessions follow online, and this is where the real conversation happens. Expect your Designer to ask about you specifically, not just your Pinterest board:

  • How often you cook, and whether it's one person or the whole family in the kitchen at once
  • Whether anyone works from home and needs a dedicated space
  • How much storage you actually need versus what looks good on paper
  • How often guests or extended family stay over
  • Anything specific to your household that a generic layout wouldn't account for, a wheelchair user at home, a pet that needs its own space, a home office that doubles as a guest room

None of this is small talk. It's the actual input your Designer uses to make layout and storage decisions, so the more specific you can be, the more your design actually reflects how you live.

Analyse

Using the accurate site measurements already on file, your Designer works through what your space genuinely allows for: where your kitchen, storage and living areas can realistically be planned, and where the real constraints are. This is where your actual design starts taking shape, built out into a 3D model in SketchUp as the Design in Progress sessions continue.

Budget

Your budget isn't a number you mention once and move past. It directly determines what's realistically on the table: laminate versus acrylic finishes, standard versus soft-close hardware, and how much customization fits within your range. NoBroker Interiors doesn't work off a fixed set of themes or predefined packages, so material and design choices scale from budget-conscious to premium depending on what you need, but that only works well if the number you've shared is accurate.

If you go in with a budget lower than what you actually intend to spend, you'll be shown options that undersell what you can actually get. Being upfront early means the direction discussed later is already grounded in what you can afford, instead of getting reworked once real numbers come up during Material Selection.

Moodboard Alignment

Once your design direction is largely settled, you'll visit the office for Material Selection, walking through actual samples, finishes, colors, laminates and catalogues with your Designer rather than choosing from a screen. This is where your moodboard, built up from the references you shared early on, actually gets tested against real materials. Whatever you pick gets folded back into your design, and renders are prepared as a standard part of the process, since seeing your actual materials and finishes rendered together matters far more than reading a spec sheet.

If your requirement is something outside a standard catalogue item, this is also where that gets worked through. NoBroker Interiors doesn't work off rigid predefined designs, so custom requirements are considered on their own merits, checked for what's actually feasible to design and execute. If a Designer runs into something outside their usual experience, there's genuine collaboration within the design team, designers consult colleagues who've handled similar requirements before finalizing a solution.

Questions worth asking your Designer along the way

  • What's included in the quoted price versus what counts as an add-on
  • Which materials or finishes you've selected are standard versus non-standard, since non-standard choices sometimes need separate approval
  • How revisions work if you want to change something after a design has been discussed
  • What happens if something isn't feasible once Site Validation comes back

Next Steps

Once your design is finalized, here's what follows, in order:

  • Site Validation. Your Designer and a Project Manager visit your site together, with you present, carrying the Docket, the finalized 2D version of your approved 3D design. The Project Manager checks it against real site conditions, feasibility, constructability, and anything that needs to change before execution, and documents this in a Site Validation Report. Any required changes get incorporated and confirmed with you directly.
  • Final Docket. Once finalized, a detailed execution document is prepared, carrying every dimension, material spec and drawing that production and installation will follow exactly.
  • Design Quality Check. This document goes through an internal quality check before it ever reaches you, verifying completeness and consistency against your requirements and site findings.
  • Your approval. Once DQC clears it, the Final Docket and quotation come to you for final sign-off.
  • Handover to Operations. After you approve, your project moves to the Operations team, and execution begins.

From here, your project moves into production and installation, which is covered in more detail in our full journey guide.

The meeting is only as useful as what you bring to it

Everything downstream — your layout, your material choices, your Final Docket — traces back to what gets shared in this first proper conversation. That's exactly why your Designer takes the time to ask specific questions rather than working off a generic brief, so the design that comes out the other end actually reflects how you live, not just a template with your name on it.

Conclusion

By the time you sit down for your first proper design conversation, your site is already measured, and your background is already known. What you bring to that conversation — your lifestyle answers, your real budget, your material direction — is what actually shapes your design from here on. Preparation is the input the entire process runs on.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to have my floor plan ready before my first call?toggle icon
It helps, but it's not mandatory before the very first screening call. What matters more is having it ready by the time your design consultation is scheduled, since that's the working session where your floor plan actually gets discussed in detail.
Is the site measurement the same as the floor plan discussed in my first meeting?toggle icon
No. The floor plan discussed earlier is from your builder and is a starting point, not a precise document. The actual Site Measurement happens later, once your project moves to the Design team, when a Design Associate visits your property and takes exact measurements
What if I give a lower budget number than what I'm actually willing to spend?toggle icon
You'll be shown options that undersell what you can actually afford. Being upfront about your real budget early means the material and design direction discussed later is already grounded in what you can actually afford, rather than getting reworked once real numbers come up during Material Selection.
Do I need to finalize my material choices at this first meeting?toggle icon
No. Early conversations get your style and material direction on record, laminate versus acrylic, lighter versus darker palettes — but the actual Material Selection, with real samples and catalogs, happens later in the process once your design direction is largely settled.
What happens if I can't answer some of the lifestyle questions clearly?toggle icon
That's fine, and it's still useful information. Half-formed thoughts about what frustrates you in your current space give your Designer something to work with. Being specific about your actual life, even imperfectly, helps them shape something that actually fits you.
