What is unicorn startup?

It’s raining unicorns this year in India.

Back 2013 when Aileen Lee came up with this term ‘unicorn’ he believed that a start up becoming a huge valuation company is a rare occurrence hence he named it after the mythical unicorn. 

A unicorn startup as we understand it is a start up with valuation of over $1 billion. Now that you know what is the meaning of unicorn, let us know a few more things about it.

As I mentioned, a startup with a valuation of more than 1 billion dollars can be termed as a unicorn. In India as of March 25, 2022, there are 94 unicorn companies with a total valuation of $319.67 billions.

Did you know? India is placed at the 3rd position in the country with the most number of unicorn companies. The US and China are leading on the first two positions with 487 and 301 unicorn startups respectively. Well, I am sure now you must know what is a unicorn startup.

I recently found out that NoBroker entered the unicorn startups list in November 2021 and is now India’s first proptech unicorn company. 

At this rate, we never know if India will emerge to be a leader in the list of most number of unicorn startups in upcoming years. 

I am so proud of the progress we are making as a country.
