What is e Way Bill in GST?

We have a family business of garments so import and export of goods are a daily thing here. However I had never known what is e way bill in GST or how to even generate it until last month I saw my uncle doing it. This needs to be done to make sure that all the goods that are getting transported follow the rules and the fee of the same is being deposited to the government. What is e way bill system in GST?

E way is basically a method to make sure that the goods that are getting transported comply with the GST Law and helps to track the movement of goods and check tax evasion as well. The validity of such e way bills depend on the distance that the goods travel. 

Not everyone can generate an e way bill. The consignor or consignee as a registered person or a transporter of goods can only generate the e way bill. 

If you are an unregistered transporter, you will be able to enroll on the common portal and generate it for movement of goods for your client.
