Recently, I learned that DDA flats are leased for 99 years. After learning this, I became curious about what happens to DDA flats after 100 years or when the tenure expires. To learn about that, I started researching and learned that, after the expiry of 99 years, the ownership will be returned to the original landowner. But the residents will be provided with some options.

What Options are Provided After the 99-Year Lease Expires?
Here are the options provided to the property owner after the lease expires.
Conversion to Freehold: The property owner can convert the leased property to a freehold property. However, he/she has to pay a conversion fee to the DDA to get ownership of the property.
Extend the Lease: Another option that the property owners get is to extend the lease on the property. When the original lease expires, they can extend it up to 999 years by paying the required fees.
These are a few things that I learned from my research. I also found the conversion to freehold property the better option here. Here are a few reasons I think it's the better option.
Freehold conversion provides the owner with a much clearer entitlement to the property.
The owner also gets more control over it and can redevelop or sell it as per his/her needs.
He/she also doesn’t need frequent renewals and permissions from the government.
And that’s about it. These are a few reasons I find the conversion option to be better. I am planning to convert my DDA property pretty soon.
