A few days back, I saw that water was continuously running from my toilet. I knew enough about plumbing to figure out that a malfunctioning float was probably the cause of my toilet's continuous running. Overfilling occurs when the float, which regulates the water level in the tank, is damaged or adjusted incorrectly. I chose to fix it myself, hence, I can share the steps on how to fix a float in a toilet.

How to Fix a Float on a Toilet?

The steps that I followed are:

  1. I found the valve behind the toilet and rotated it in a clockwise direction. This allowed me to examine the internal float system.

  2. I had a cup-shaped float that travels up and down the fill valve.

  3. To stop the water at the proper level, I lowered the float by turning the adjustment screw with a screwdriver.

  4. Flushed after that to test.

Now let me tell you if the float had been fractured, I would have to get it replaced. But that did not happen. Although this is a DIY method, I’d suggest if you are unsure about the steps it is best to hire a professional plumber for the job.
