Let me tell you how to revise income tax return, based on Section 139(5) of Income Tax Act. Under Section 139(5), taxpayers can file a revised return to correct errors or omissions in their original return from missed income to unclaimed deductions without penalty.
How to Revise the Income Tax Return?
It is provided that it is done before the earlier of: December 31 of the assessment year, or the completion of the income-tax assessment. Even if you filed a belated return, it too can be revised.
Begin by logging into the
Income Tax e‑Filing portal, select the relevant assessment year, and choose “Revised Return under Section 139(5)”.
You must provide the acknowledgment number and date of the original ITR, and use the same form (e.g. ITR‑1, ITR‑2) as initially filed.
Amend any incorrect or missing details income, deductions, bank info, capital gains, etc. and preview your return carefully.
Submit and e‑verify it through Aadhaar OTP, net‑banking, or DSC; without verification, the revised ITR isn’t valid.
If you miss the December 31 cutoff, a fallback option is the Updated Return (ITR‑U) under Section 139(8A), which can be filed up to two years after the assessment year though it involves additional tax and penalties of 25 to 50% on underreported income.
