Summary
To calculate your water bill, subtract the previous meter reading from the current reading to find your water usage. Multiply the usage by the applicable water rate to calculate the water charge. Then, add fixed charges, sewage charges, taxes, or other applicable fees. Check your readings and bill carefully to track usage and identify any sudden increase in charges.

Here is how to calculate water bill

  • Check the Previous Meter Reading

    • First, check the previous water meter reading shown on your last bill. For example, suppose the previous reading is 1,250 KL.

  • Check the Current Meter Reading

    • Next, check the current reading on the water meter. Suppose the current reading is 1,270 KL.

  • Calculate Water Usage

    • Subtract the previous reading from the current reading to find the total water used.

    • Water used = Current reading - Previous reading

    • 1,270 - 1,250 = 20 KL

    • So, the total water consumption is 20 KL for the billing period.

  • Apply the Water Rate

    • Now, check the water tariff charged by your local water board. If the rate is Rs. 10 per KL, multiply the water usage by the rate.

    • Water charge = 20 × Rs. 10 = Rs. 200

    • Some water boards use different rates for different consumption slabs. In that case, calculate the charge for each slab separately.

  • Add Other Charges

    • Finally, check your bill for fixed charges, sewage charges, taxes, or other applicable fees. Add these charges to the water charge.

    • Total water bill = Water charge + Other applicable charges

This gives you a clear idea of your water bill for each billing period. Keeping your water bills and meter readings safe can also help you compare your usage over time. If you notice a sudden increase in the bill, check the meter reading and charges carefully.

Hello mate! I was wondering about water bill calculation a couple of weeks ago. I thought of knowing our water consumption and then calculating the bill. I was able to learn this through a neighbour who lives two buildings away. The method includes just 5 steps. I have a digital metre at home so let me share the process of calculation for the same.

How do you Calculate Water Bill?

Here is the complete process to calculate your water bill through your metre.

  1. Begin by removing the cover of your water metre box. You can do so with the help of a screwdriver.

  2. After doing so, you will be able to locate the digital metre dial in front of you. Remove the protective cap to view the readings. Your metre can be one of those that get activated through light. So, if you do not see a reading, switch on your phone’s flashlight and aim it at the metre.

  3. At the bottom of the metre, you will be able to see the water noted by the metre in the form of a row of numbers. While the corner section will have a smaller number. Which is the amount of water that crosses your home every minute.

  4. Now, carefully note down the reading as shown in the metre on your phone or a diary.

  5. Our municipalities have different methods to measure the bill as per water usage. This is done in litres and in other units. So, find that out first and the rate per unit in your area. Then, you can easily calculate the bill based on the consumption found out through the metre.

That’s all you need to know your bill through a water metre. I hope this helps you learn how to calculate water bill from meter reading.
