Twist drill bits are most commonly used for drilling into wooden surfaces. But if you ask, can I use a concrete drill bit on wood, you may, but I’d suggest leaving the work to a professional carpenter, as it's risky to do it yourself. We had a vertical wooden board that we wanted to use as a key holder. We hired a carpenter to help us. Let me share a few tips to help you along the way.
Can You Use a Concrete Drill Bit on Wood?
We asked the carpenter what kind of drill bits are usually preferred for wood, and he mentioned you can use concrete and masonry too, but it’s recommended to use a material-specific drill bit to ensure smooth drilling. Here are some tips he shared.
It’s important to drill a pilot hole first, especially if you're a beginner and have no prior experience in carpentry. This smaller hole will help you drill a larger bit for the final size of the opening.
He also recommended using a spare or sacrificial piece of wood under the main wood you’re using to drill. This is to prevent any kind of tear out.
You also must drill at a specific angle. Here, he drilled perpendicular to the workpiece because a slightest tilt can also disrupt your exit hole.
If you’re a first timer, you may also want to use a drill press. This will help you drill straight into the workpiece.
These are a few lessons we learned on using a drill bit in the right manner. If you still want to be clear about can I use concrete drill bit on wood, you may consult a carpenter who will guide you better.
I hope this helps.
