My uncle has red cemented flooring and with the passing year, it becomes shinier more and more. I really love its colours but my mother says that their water is good and has less iron for which their floor looks so good. If we use red cement for our floor, we might not be getting the same result so it is better to avoid using it. She knew I loved the colour so said that this time we will be using quarry tiles for flooring. I asked her to define quarry tile and she did. Let me share what I got to know about it here.

What is quarry tile?
A quarry tile is an unglazed tile used for flooring. They are typically reddish-brown in colour which is quite similar to the red cemented flooring. They are usually ½ or ¾ inch thick and built by extrusion process or by press forming and firing natural clay or shales.
Why is it called quarry?Quarry refers to a place from where a stone or other materials gets extracted but quarry tile has no relevance with it. It is a misleading name and they are not sliced from a quarry like that of a granite slab. Minerals such as feldspar, clay and shales are grounded together and extruded into tile forms and then baked at a very high temperature to get a quarry tile.
They are highly durable and can stay as it is for decades. I am glad that my mother understood my wish and using the quarry tile indeed cheered me up. This is the simplest way to define quarry tile and I hope you understood it as well.
