Summary
HDFC Bank currently charges nothing for eNACH registration or cancellation, so setting up or removing an e-mandate is free for customers. An e-mandate can run up to Rs. 1 crore, and a separate e-mandate is needed for each loan account. Charges can arise elsewhere, though: if a debit bounces because of insufficient balance, return or penalty fees may apply, so keep enough funds on the strike date.

HDFC Bank currently does not levy any charge for registering or cancelling an eNACH or e-mandate. So setting up automatic EMI debits from your account is free. An e-mandate is a digital alternative to a paper mandate that lets your lender collect recurring loan payments directly from your bank account. The facility runs under the NPCI framework, so your bank must live on it. Below, I have shared about HDFC e mandate charges.

How to Register an E-Mandate for an HDFC Loan?

  1. Check that your repayment account matches the one printed in your loan sanction letter.

  2. Keep your registered mobile number or email ID active, since the OTP is sent there.

  3. Open the ACH e-mandate registration page on HDFC Bank's loan portal and enter your loan details.

  4. Verify the bank account, IFSC, and MICR details displayed on the screen against your cheque or passbook.

  5. Select net banking or debit card as your authentication mode.

  6. Choose the 5th of the month as the strike date, which is the only date available.

  7. Note that the maximum amount per mandate is twice your EMI or Rs. 1 crore, whichever is lower.

  8. Log in with your bank credentials to authenticate, then submit the mandate.

  9. Repeat the process for every loan account, as each needs its own e-mandate.

Allow up to 10 days for registration. Post-dated cheques may be needed for the interim period. Costs usually arise only when a debit fails. Mandates are generally presented on the strike date, though technical reasons can delay presentation by a few days, so maintain adequate balance until the debit goes through.

If the debit is returned, HDFC Bank's charge schedule lists ECS/ACH debit return charges of Rs. 500 plus taxes per instance. Late-payment or bounce charges under your loan agreement may also apply, so check your sanction letter. I hope this helps.
