Is Rent Agreement Valid if Not Registered?
The simple rule for the registration of a rent agreement is that if the rental period is less than or equal to 11 months, the unregistered agreement is still considered a valid piece of evidence in a court of law.
However, if the rental period exceeds 11 months, the rent agreement needs to be registered for it to be considered as a law-binding document.
According to Section 17 in the Registration Act 1908, it is mandatory to register for leases and rent of immovable property from year to year or for any period which is beyond a year.
