Hi there, I will share with you how to transfer vehicle from one state to another in a step by step process.  To transfer your vehicle from one state on another you should keep the vehicle re-registered in the new state for more than a year. You need to clear your road and lifetime tax again and the amount should be calculated based on a vehicle's depreciation value. The vehicle owner must submit the tax receipt to the former state for repayment of paid road tax. Then you need to follow the new State's re-registration requirements.

How to transfer vehicle from one state to another : Step by step guide-

  1. Get a No Objection Certificate (NOC) from the Traffic Department.
  2. Bring important documents such as registration certificate, road tax payment certificate, valid PUC, clearance from NCRB, NOC, Car insurance certificate to the RTO office.
  3. Submit the documents mentioned and pay the fee in the RTO office. After obtaining the NOC from the RTO office you can raise a request to re-register the vehicle in the new state.
  4. Notify the insurance company so that they can update the insurance document. Apply for re-registration by visiting the RTO office of the new state.
  5. When you relocate, you should pay the road tax for the new state.

Procedure of Transfer of Vehicle Registration from One State to another State

To avoid any dispute for vehicle re-registration after you get transferred to another state permanently, this is what you should do.
  • Obtain No-Objection Certificate: The first thing you should do is procure the NOC from the RTO where the vehicle was originally registered. Make sure that the NOC has a clear imprint of chassis number.
  • Take the vehicle to another state: After you get the NOC from your local RTO, you can take the vehicle to the state you will live.
  • Visit the State RTO: Visit the RTO of the state in which you will live permanently. Do not forget to take all the required documents.
  • Submit all the documents: You should verify all the documents before you submit to them.
  • Fill Road-Tax Challan: The RTO of the new state will issue you a new challan for road-tax. Pay the requisite amount of fees.
  • Vehicle Verification: In the presence of the RTO officer, get the vehicle inspected. The officer or his representative will take the imprint of the chassis number.
  • Collect the Registration Certificate: After the verification is complete, you can confirm the date on which you can collect the RC for the new state.

Pro tip for NOC

  • The NOC comes with an expiry date, so you are supposed to complete the re-registration procedure before the NOC becomes invalid.
  • If your car/bike is bought with financial support from any bank or agency then you will also need a NOC from the supporting bank or agency.

List of Documents Required for Re-registration of Vehicle

  • Previous Registration Certificate in original.
  • Three copies of Form 28 or the NOC issued by the previous state’s RTO.
  • Form 20 which is the application for the registration of the motor vehicle.

When I was planning to relocate from Kolkata to Bangalore, I had no idea about how to move vehicle from one state to another. Though the process was cumbersome, I was successfully able to transport my car to Bangalore. The most important step in the process of transferring a vehicle's registration from one state to another is getting the No Objection Certificate (NOC) from the RTO where the vehicle is currently registered and reregistering the vehicle in the new state.

How to Send Vehicle from One State to Another?

  • I obtained an NOC from Kolkata RTO.
  • Once I obtained the NOC, I submitted it to the local RTO (where the car was first registered) along with Forms 27 and 28. I was asked to submit the vehicle's Registration Certificate (RC), insurance records, a Pollution Under Control (PUC) check, the vehicle's chassis imprint, and the application to the bank to request an NOC.
Note: It's crucial to keep in mind that the NOC required to transport a vehicle from one state to another has a deadline. Before the NOC expires, the vehicle transfer/car transfer procedure should be finished. You'll need to reapply for a more latest NOC after the expiration date.
  • I made arrangements for my vehicle transfer through a carrier after receiving the NOC.
  • Finally, after reaching Bangalore I had to apply for vehicle re-registration in Bangalore RTO. As a result, my DL number changed from WB to KA.
I must say that the latest RTO regulations must be followed at all times, as they can differ between states and change at any point.
