A few months back, I noticed some cracks on the basement wall. During the rains, water also started coming in. That’s when I realised the stone foundation of my house was damaged. I checked online to learn how to fix stone foundation and found the proper method, but it was a big process. So, I hired a professional to fix it. 

How to Fix a Stone Foundation?

Let me tell you this is not a DIY task, so I hired a professional. He came and saw that some stones were loose, and the old mortar was falling off. 

1. First, he removed all the loose parts, cleaned the area properly, and then carefully applied new mortar to fill the gaps.

2. He told me that both inside and outside walls must be repaired, so he used strong mortar inside and soft lime mortar outside.

3. Next, he checked if water was collecting near the foundation. He helped slope the soil away and fixed the gutters to stop water from flowing onto the walls.

4. The technician also added extensions to the downspouts to carry water far from the house.

5. For extra strength, he put a steel mesh on the walls and sprayed concrete to make the foundation strong again.

6. In the worst-damaged areas, he replaced old stones with new concrete blocks to make sure the foundation is safe.

After all this work, my stone foundation was fixed properly and is now strong and dry.

Water can damage stone walls over time, so you want to keep it from sitting near the base.

1. Make sure the ground slopes away from the wall so water drains off. 

2. Also, check that your gutters and downspouts are not pouring water right next to the wall.

3. If they are, just add some extensions to carry the water far away. It’s an easy fix that can prevent bigger problems later.

2) Inspect for Damage

3) Change the Stones

5) Cement Joints

You must use the proper cement for your stone and mix it as directed by the manufacturer. Pour the cement into the joint with your spatula to fill the space. And then use a brush to remove any extra. You can use any cement or mortar for stone foundation repair.

6) Vapour Barriers

You can use a vapour barrier to solve mould and moisture problem on your stone basement wall. A straightforward piece of rubber material placed on the interior of the wall serves as a vapour barrier. It stops water from getting inside your home. You can use adhesive or sealant to completely cover the gaps after cutting the vapour barrier. Then you can mount your drywall over the vapour barrier when it has been set up, then carry on as usual.
