Summary
To paint laminate furniture, you must first prepare the surface by cleaning and lightly sanding it to create adhesion. Then, apply a high-quality primer, allowing each coat to dry completely, followed by several thin, even coats of paint. Finally, seal the painted surface with a topcoat for durability and a smooth finish. Essential preparation steps include thorough cleaning with solutions like rubbing alcohol and water or sugar soap, and then allowing the surface to air dry. Light sanding with fine-grit sandpaper is recommended to provide a rough texture for paint to adhere to, though this step may be skipped if using a primer-and-paint combination product. For application, use a brush for edges and a roller for larger areas, applying multiple thin coats and ensuring adequate drying time between each layer, typically overnight for primer coats.

My laminate furniture started to lose its colour and showed clear signs of wear & tear, making it look outdated and unattractive. I didn’t want to spend more on replacement, so I chose to paint the furniture since it is the most affordable solution. I spent a lot of time researching on how to paint furniture that is laminate. I carefully followed the steps in the right order to prevent damaging the furniture.

How Do You Paint Laminate Furniture?

I will share the steps on how can I paint laminate furniture below.

  • Cleaning:

Use a dry cloth for dusting the laminate furniture and for hard stains. You can either spray the solution of ¼ cup rubbing alcohol mixed with ¼ cup water or mixture of vinegar and water on the surface and then wipe with a damp cloth.

  • Disassemble furniture:

If you have a laminated furniture with two or more pieces, you can remove them to get a clean finished process.

  • Sanding: You can lightly scrub the surface with a fine-grit sandpaper, avoid overdoing it otherwise you’ll pull out the laminate surface..

  • Primer Layering:

Using the wrong primer will create an uneven surface with bubbles. Use a brush for the edges and a roller for the larger areas when applying high-quality paint. You may need to apply two coats. Let each coat dry overnight before the next application.

  • Laminate Furniture Painting:

Use an angled brush to reach corners and a foam roller for a smooth laminate surface by removing brush marks. You can apply several coats of paint and then seal it with a topcoat to protect the long life of the laminate.

I hope this answers your question about how do I paint laminate furniture.

What is Laminate Flooring?

Preparation, sanding, priming, and painting are the four stages in the lamination of furniture. It is an inexpensive and simple approach to change and modernise the look of your furniture. You can get the detailed steps on how to paint laminate furniture below.

How Do I Paint Laminate Furniture?

I particularly love a handful of older pieces of furniture I have. However, they no longer have the same shine after years of use. Instead of buying new furniture, I looked up online how to paint furniture that is laminate. I then came upon the steps listed below:

  • Correct preparation is essential for achieving an outstanding finish. If not, you may discover that the paint bubbles, peels, or rubs off immediately. Use sugar soap to clean the furniture and then dampen it with water.

  • Allow the surface to air dry. To give the surface a roughness that the paint will stick to, gently sand it with fine-grit sandpaper.

  • You may skip this phase if you're using a paint that serves as a primer, such as our Furniture Paint.

  • If not, use a paintbrush or roller to apply a thin, even coat of primer, ensuring it covers every surface. Before proceeding to the following step, leave the primer dry out completely.

  • Finally, apply the paint topcoat once the priming has dried. To safeguard the paint while providing the furniture with a smooth sheen, you must apply an additional painting coat.

Just keep in mind to go slowly, work in little areas, and give each layer plenty of time to dry. I hope you got an idea of how do you paint laminate furniture.
