Laying floor tiles on concrete is a straightforward process if done correctly. Here are the steps to follow:
  1. Prepare the Surface: Clean the concrete surface thoroughly, removing any debris, grease, or sealants.
  2. Check for Levelness: Ensure the concrete is level and smooth. Use a self-leveling compound if needed.
  3. Apply Thinset Mortar: Spread thinset mortar evenly on the concrete using a notched trowel.
  4. Place Tiles: Press tiles firmly into the mortar, using spacers to maintain even gaps between tiles.

A while back while doing some work at home, I dropped a heavy item on the floor and cracked some of the tiles on the floor. I removed those tiles and to my luck, a few spare tiles of the same colour were at my home as well. But I didn’t know how to lay them and thus, I called a friend and asked him how do you lay tile on a concrete floor.

How to Install Tile on Concrete Floor?

Here are the steps that my friend told me about how to lay floor tiles on concrete.

  • Before putting the tile, he asked me to clean and prepare the concrete subfloor.

  • Following that, he told me to level the area with a self-leveling concrete.

  • Now, he asked me to plan the layout by laying the tiles without any adhesive and check which pattern works best.

  • After that, I had to mix the mortar according to the manufacturer's directions.

  • The next step was to add the mortar to the floor and then lay the tiles over it according to the planned layout.

  • He also told me to use spacers to ensure that the tiles have consistent gaps between them.

  • Following that, I had to wait for around a day for the mortar to set.

  • When that was done, I had to mix the grout and add it to the tiles.

  • Finally, I had to seal the grout using a grout sealer.

And that’s about it. I hope these steps about how do you lay tile on a concrete floor has been of help to you.
