- Prepare the Surface: Clean the concrete surface thoroughly, removing any debris, grease, or sealants.
- Check for Levelness: Ensure the concrete is level and smooth. Use a self-leveling compound if needed.
- Apply Thinset Mortar: Spread thinset mortar evenly on the concrete using a notched trowel.
- Place Tiles: Press tiles firmly into the mortar, using spacers to maintain even gaps between tiles.

A while back while doing some work at home, I dropped a heavy item on the floor and cracked some of the tiles on the floor. I removed those tiles and to my luck, a few spare tiles of the same colour were at my home as well. But I didn’t know how to lay them and thus, I called a friend and asked him how do you lay tile on a concrete floor.
How to Install Tile on Concrete Floor?
Here are the steps that my friend told me about how to lay floor tiles on concrete.
Before putting the tile, he asked me to clean and prepare the concrete subfloor.
Following that, he told me to level the area with a self-leveling concrete.
Now, he asked me to plan the layout by laying the tiles without any adhesive and check which pattern works best.
After that, I had to mix the mortar according to the manufacturer's directions.
The next step was to add the mortar to the floor and then lay the tiles over it according to the planned layout.
He also told me to use spacers to ensure that the tiles have consistent gaps between them.
Following that, I had to wait for around a day for the mortar to set.
When that was done, I had to mix the grout and add it to the tiles.
Finally, I had to seal the grout using a grout sealer.
And that’s about it. I hope these steps about how do you lay tile on a concrete floor has been of help to you.
