Summary
Wardrobe depth depends on the type. Hinged wardrobes typically need about 24 inches, while sliding wardrobes require around 26 inches to accommodate tracks. Smaller spaces can use 22 inches, though it may feel tight. Depth should allow clothes to hang freely without cramping, ensuring easy access and proper storage for different needs.

Here is how deep does a wardrobe need to be:

 Hinged Wardrobe

  1. In a hinged wardrobe, the depth should be about 24 inches. This size allows you to hang clothes properly without folding them.

  2. If your room is small, you can reduce the depth to 22 inches, but clothes may feel tight and not hang well.

  3. You can keep the height around 84 inches or extend it up to the ceiling for extra storage.

  4. Also, keep each door width to 24 inches or less so the hinges do not carry too much weight.

Sliding Wardrobe

  1. For a sliding wardrobe, you should keep a depth of about 26 inches. This includes space for the sliding track, which helps the doors move smoothly.

  2. This extra space also prevents clothes from getting stuck. Make sure the total width is at least 7 feet so you can use both panels easily.

  3. Also, do not make each panel wider than 4 feet, or it will become heavy to slide.

 Child’s Wardrobe

  1. A child’s wardrobe should divide the inside height into three equal sections of about 28 inches each so kids can reach and use them easily.

  2. Keep hanging rods low for easy access. Add drawers between 6 and 15 inches to store toys, books, and small items.

  3. Keep open shelves about 12 inches apart for shoes, folded clothes, and towels.

Walk-in Closet

  1. For a walk-in closet, you should keep enough space to move comfortably.

  2. Leave 54 to 60 inches between wardrobes on both sides so you can walk even when doors are open.

  3. If you place a wardrobe on one side only, keep at least 3 feet of space in front. This space helps you stand, move, and use the wardrobe easily.
