While renovating my house, I realised there are a few boxes of ceramic tiles completely unutilised, that I had originally planned for my kitchen. Hence, this question came to my mind: Can indoor ceramic tile be used outdoors? The renovation contractor said that ceramic tiles can be used outside, however they are often not the best for weather resistance and long-term durability. Because they are made for regulated settings, indoor ceramic tiles might not be able to withstand the weather conditions.
Can Ceramic Tile Go Outdoors?
For outdoor applications, my renovation contractor suggested that I opt for porcelain or vitrified tiles. It is because of their less porosity and more resistance to weathering.
The main reasons that he highlighted to avoid using ceramic tiles for outdoors are:
Because ceramic tiles are porous, they are more likely to absorb moisture, which over time can wear, discolour, and crack.
Furthermore, prolonged exposure to sunshine, rain, or temperature changes can cause them to fade, chip, or disintegrate rapidly.
Ceramic tiles might not offer the strength and slide resistance needed for high foot traffic areas like patios and driveways.
So this is what I learned about the usage of ceramic tiles. Hope this clears your doubt, too.
