House rent allowance or HRA is a common allowance that salaried individuals receive from their employers. People living in a rental property can save tax by claiming an HRA deduction from the salary. But what will I do if I live with my parents? Can I pay rent to my parents and claim HRA? Let’s find out: Salaried individuals who live with their parents can also claim a deduction for HRA by paying rent to their parents. For this, you are required to pay the rent via cheque or transfer the money (rent) to their bank account. However, you need to make sure your parents own this property. You can’t be a co-owner or owner of this property as you can’t claim tax exemption on rent paid to yourself. Documents needed: Rent Receipts Rent Agreement HRA claimed is taxable for parents Your parents are required to pay the tax on the rent money paid by you. It will come under the ‘income from house property’ head in their Income-tax return. However, they can deduct property taxes and also claim a standard deduction of 30% on the rental income. I hope you don’t have any doubts regarding questions like “can I pay rent to my mother and claim HRA” or “can I pay rent to my father and claim HRA”

How to claim HRA by paying rent to your parents?

  • You can pay rent to your parents if you are staying with your parents.
  • This should be done by transferring the money (rent) to their bank account or paying via a cheque. This way you will be able to claim your HRA deduction properly.
  • Since rent is paid to owners, the property must be owned by your parents. It may be owned by one or both of your parents. So, you can deposit the money to any one of the parents in case of joint house ownership, or to the parent who is the legal owner of the house.
  • Remember that you cannot be an owner or co-owner of this property since you cannot claim tax exemption on rent paid to yourself.
