Overview
After buying a house or a flat, the electricity connection often continues in the previous owner's name for months or years. It rarely causes a problem until something does: a billing dispute, a request for a load increase, an unpaid bill from before you moved in, or a loan officer asking for a utility bill in your name.
A change of consumer name is requested from the electricity distribution company in your area, such as BESCOM in Bengaluru or MSEDCL in Maharashtra. The usual requirements are a completed application, your identity and address proof, a copy of the registered sale deed or other ownership proof, and a no-dues confirmation on the earlier owner's account. Some companies also ask for a copy of the last paid bill and a fee, and may ask for a fresh security deposit.
Where the previous owner is unavailable or the dues are not cleared, the process becomes slower, which is why starting soon after purchase helps. For inherited property, legal heir documents are used in place of a sale deed. We prepare the application, gather the documents, follow up with the distribution company and make sure the new bill shows your name. Any pending dues of the earlier owner should be settled by the seller, not left for you to deal with.
