A double-height living room adds instant grandeur, openness, and elegance to your home. With its soaring ceilings, stylish wall interiors, and dramatic lighting options, it creates a luxurious yet welcoming space. Whether for a modern or small home, this design elevates visual appeal while enhancing natural light and architectural charm

One way to elevate your house design is by incorporating double-height living rooms. You can also elevate your small double-height living room with these ideas and give just the perfect final touches to your house.

Here we will give you tips and tricks on how to make it a grand part of the house. Many people have high-ceiling living rooms, but some of them fail to take advantage of the beautiful double height.

1. Full-length glass walls

The double-length ceiling-to-floor glass walls are of utmost importance from an architectural point of view when it comes to a double-height living room. This not only allows you to play around with the height of the living rooms but also allows natural light in abundance.

  • Ceiling-to-floor glass walls are architecturally vital for double-height living rooms.
  • They enhance the vertical space and bring in abundant natural light.
  • Sunlight adds warmth and luxury to the double-height wall interior.
  • Large glass walls offer an outdoor feel, even when indoors.
  • An open layout with glass makes the space more calming and inviting.
  • You can choose a full-length glass wall or a divided one with a small wall section.
  • Both styles maintain the double-height effect and add space and elegance to the design.

2. Add a Focal Point

The double-height living room usually has the most furniture, art pieces, or decorative items in the house. This abundance of items can create visual distractions, taking away focus from the double-height ceiling design.

  • To avoid this, it's important to direct attention upward to highlight the full height of the space.
  • Creating a focal point helps hold the viewer’s gaze and enhances the sense of space and grandeur in the room.
  • Use gigantic or full-length art pieces or paintings that align with the double-height wall design.
  • These large artworks serve as a focal wall, adding height illusion and artistic appeal.
  • Thick or oversized frames on wall pieces can further emphasise size and draw attention.
  • These elements are especially useful in a small double-height living room, where vertical design can make the space feel more luxurious.
  • All these strategies contribute to a more balanced and visually striking double-height house design.

3. Have a Functional Wall

functional wall design adds style and utility to a double-height living room

A common disadvantage of double-height living rooms is wasted vertical space that could have served a functional purpose. One way to optimise this is by adding storage units to unused walls, integrating them into the double-height wall interior.

  • Storage is always in demand, regardless of how spacious the home is.
  • Wall-mounted storage can be both functional and stylish.
  • A great idea is to install a floor-to-ceiling book wall, which adds sophistication to the room.
  • This also enhances the utility and aesthetics of the double-height ceiling design.
  • It’s a practical and elegant solution, especially in small double-height homes where space is limited.

4. Add in Woodwork

wooden elements, bringing warmth and elegance to a double-height living room

Adding wooden elements from the ceiling to the floor creates a unified, seamless look. Combining wall woodwork with floor or ceiling woodwork enhances elegance and continuity.

  • Wood adds richness, structure, and vertical emphasis to the double-height wall design.
  • Full-length wood features bring warmth, earthiness, and a royal touch to the space.
  • For a budget-friendly option, use wooden laminates, which closely resemble real wood.
  • Laminates offer a similar aesthetic at a lower cost, ideal for small double-height living rooms.
  • Smart material choices can still achieve a luxurious, double-height living room finish without overspending.

5. Use Rich Colours

rich colors add depth and luxury to a double-height living room

Colours play a major role in changing the entire look of the space. In a double-height living room, you can either use a couple of colours or one single colour throughout.

  • As long as the colour brings the entire look together, both approaches are acceptable.
  • Rich colours like shades of brown and vibrant colours like blue, red, and yellow enhance the double-height ceiling design.
  • These colours help highlight the room like a colourful painting in a white-walled space.
  • Vibrant colours make the space more dynamic and add drama to the double ceiling living room.
  • You can incorporate colours from other rooms to create a cohesive and creative colour palette.
  • This technique works well in a luxury double-height living room where colour showcases elegance.

6. Installing Art Pieces

statement art pieces enhance the grandeur of a double-height living room

One of the best advantages of having a double-height living room is the double-length wall that it provides. Incorporating wall art in the double-height living room wall design can also have psychological benefits, offering inspiration, comfort, or simply visual pleasure.

  • A double-height living room offers a tall wall that is ideal for showcasing art.
  • Wall art in such spaces can provide psychological benefits like inspiration and comfort.
  • You can choose either one large artwork or a curated set of smaller art pieces.
  • Art helps draw the eye upward, emphasising the vertical scale of the space.
  • 3D art installations can add depth and interest to the double-height wall interior
  • These elements enhance the richness, liveliness, and drama of the double ceiling living room.
  • In smaller double-height spaces, art is a smart way to utilize wall height while adding a touch of luxury.

7. Adding Chandeliers

chandeliers adds elegance and drama to a double-height living room

Chandeliers are all in one package. They have so many advantages and are so underrated. They add richness to the double-height ceiling design by making it look fuller.

  • They make the room look luxurious, too. There are a lot of chandelier designs that come with light fittings, flooding the room with more lights along with natural light.
  • Most importantly, chandeliers add height to the living room, giving a double-height living room.
  • A chandelier placed strategically enhances the double-height wall interior and adds a striking visual to the double-height living room wall design.
  • Even a small double-height living room or a small house with a double-height living room can benefit from a well-chosen chandelier, transforming it into a luxury double-height living room effortlessly.

8. Layered Lighting

layered lighting creates depth and warmth in a double-height living room

Lights can either make or break the room. Correct usage of light enhances the entire double-height living room, even if it has minimal furniture. Lighting significantly impacts the overall feel of a double-height living room. Layered lighting creates a cohesive and warm atmosphere using different types of lights. Properly installed layered lighting enhances charm and calmness in the room.

  • Options include LED, track lighting, yellow lights, and ambient lights.
  • Ambient lights are ideal for living rooms, as they are welcoming and easy on the eyes.
  • LED lights suit more functional areas like study rooms, washrooms, or kitchens.
  • In luxury double-height living rooms, ambient lighting beautifully highlights wall interiors and overall design.

9. Tall Plants

tall plants bring freshness and scale to a double-height living room

Having plants around the house gives a feeling of being in nature despite being indoors, and that is the beauty of having plants in the house. They not only look natural but are also healthy to have around in the house. Some indoor plants, as monstera and snake plant, help in the purification of air in the house.

  • Indoor plants create a natural feel inside the home and promote a sense of well-being.
  • Plants like monstera and snake plant help purify indoor air.
  • Tall plants give an illusion of height, making the living room appear larger and fresher.
  • Greenery adds freshness and enhances the mental atmosphere of the space.
  • Plants provide a soft contrast to structural elements in a double-height house design.
  • Positioning plants near double-height walls enhances the room’s ambiance and supports a luxurious design.

10. Adding a Staircase

a stylish staircase adds functionality and charm to a double-height living room

Usually, double-height living rooms have staircases hidden away from the living room. But it can be used in the double-height living room too, which helps in making the room look big.

  • It is, of course, not only functional but also gives a very grand appearance to the entire place. Having gigantic stairs in the living room gives a royal appearance, too.
  • The presence of a staircase in a double-height house design elevates the architectural interest and adds drama to the double-height living room design.

A double-height living room design instantly adds grandeur, space, and natural light to your home. Whether you're working with a large layout or a small double-height space, incorporating elements like full-length glass walls, layered lighting, chandeliers, and tall plants can enhance both aesthetics and functionality. My daughter who is studying architecture in college came with me to the HSR center. She was quizzing the consultant about material sustainability—whether the plywood is from certified sources, if the laminates have low VOC emissions, what happens to waste material from the factory. The consultant handled every question and even pulled up their material certification documents. My daughter was impressed. She told me later: 'Appa, this company actually knows their supply chain, not just their design.' When a 20-year-old architecture student validates your choice, you know you've picked right.

He was really patient while we took our time to finalise the designs and when we did material reselection. He was proffesional yet friendly and made the design phase smooth for us. We would be starting the production soon and I will update this review on project completion.

Specifically writing about the false ceiling consultation at the center. I didnt know there was so much to know about ceilings! The designer showed us different options—gypsum board, POP, wooden grid, MDF panels—and explained which works best for which room. The living room got a peripheral cove lighting design with warm LEDs, the bedroom got a simple recessed light plan (she said elaborate ceilings in bedrooms can feel oppressive when your lying down, which makes total sense), and the kids room got a small starlight panel. She also planned all the AC routing, curtain pelmet concealment, and speaker cable channels inside the false ceiling so nothing is visible. The ceiling alone transformed how our rooms feel. Also, their false ceiling pricing per sq ft was pretty competitive—I had checked with two separate contractors before.

This review is from a couple who fights about everything haha. I wanted dark colors and modern look, my husband wanted light wood and earthy tones. The designer at Varthur center literally played mediator. She showed us a concept where the common areas (living room, kitchen) use light wooden textures that my husband likes, and the master bedroom uses the darker charcoal tones that I prefer. The kids room got a neutral palette with colorful accents. Everyone happy. She called it 'transitional design' where different zones have different personalities but connected by a common accent color (we chose teal). The 3D walkthrough she made showed exactly how it all flows together. I showed it to 3 friends and they all said it looks like something out of Architectural Digest. OK maybe I'm exaggerating a little but you get the point. We both love it.

We had a unique situation—our apartment has two different wall thicknesses in the kitchen area due to some builder construction issue. One wall is standard 4.5 inch and the adjacent one is 9 inch. The NoBroker Varthur team actually sent a measurement person who identified this variation and adjusted the cabinet depth design accordingly so both sides look flush from the front. Previous vendor we consulted didn't even notice this discrepancy during their site visit. The devil truly is in the details and NoBroker catches those devils.

We are from Thanisandra and visited the center for our villa interior project. The designer adapted her approach for a larger independent house—didn't just scale up apartment designs. She proposed separate design personalities for ground floor (where guests are entertained—formal, elegant) and first floor (private family spaces—warm, casual). The staircase got under-staircase pull-out storage that holds 30 pairs of shoes. The double-height living room got a dramatic false ceiling with a chandelier recess. The master bedroom got a walk-in closet design instead of a regular wardrobe. Villa interiors need different thinking than apartment interiors and this team clearly has experience with both formats.

I had a great experience with NoBroker Interiors at the HRBR Experience Centre. The entire process was smooth and well-managed. Pradnyan (Designer) did an excellent job in understanding our requirements and providing thoughtful design solutions. Unnav from Sales was very supportive and ensured everything was clearly explained and well-coordinated throughout the process. Hetal also gave a detailed explanation, making it easy for us to understand every aspect. Overall, the team was professional, responsive, and helpful. Looking forward to moving ahead with them!

Something specific about the Horamavu team that I havent seen mentioned in other reviews—they offer a FREE pre-site-assessment before giving you any quotation. An engineer visits your apartment, checks wall conditions for dampness, verifies electrical point locations, measures ceiling height variations (builder flats often have slightly uneven ceilings), checks floor levelness, and documents any structural elements like beams and pillars that affect furniture placement. All this BEFORE you pay a single rupee. This assessment report then becomes the foundation for an accurate design and quotation. Other companies quote based on a floor plan drawing alone without ever seeing the actual site conditions. That's like prescribing medicine without examining the patient.

I am delighted to write this review after completing my VILA interior through NO BROKER Team The production and execution team is very professional and customer friendly in accommodating and matching with our requirements and our dreams of what we want to have it in our home. If I can mention the name then it is certainly Mr. Harsha, Mr. Munish and Mr. Suhail will take away entire credit for the final output This team is far better than their in-house design team who doesn't know much about practical application of what they or could do using a software. They need more experience particularly using the wood and material selection along with final finish with light fittings. Even though there was a mismatch and less expectation from NO BROKER certain team members, The above mentioned team members pulled it together and gave the best satisfactory finish

We visited for our complete 4BHK project and what impressed me most was the COORDINATION. NoBroker didnt just handle the modular furniture—they coordinated with our painter for color matching, our electrician for additional power points needed for built-in appliances and wardrobe USB charging, and our AC contractor for duct routing through the false ceiling. They provided a detailed coordination document to each vendor listing exactly what pre-work needs to happen before their installation begins. This vendor coordination is usually a NIGHTMARE—the typical situation is each vendor blaming the other for delays. Having one team that manages all the interfaces is incredibly valuable.

As a working professional with limited time to manage contractors, the project management aspect is what attracted me. Visited the center with a Pinterest board of 47 saved kitchen images. The consultant didn’t get overwhelmed. She patiently went through each one, identified common elements I was drawn to (handleless cabinets, wooden textures, open shelving), and created a unified design that captured the essence of all those pins. She basically translated my chaotic Pinterest board into a cohesive design. Overall we are very satisfied with the entire experience from start to finish.
