Why Split AC Compressor Not Working But Fan is Running?

Here’s why split AC compressor not working but fan is running,

1. Different components, different roles. In a split AC, the indoor fan and outdoor compressor operate independently. The fan circulates air, while the compressor handles cooling. So, the fan can run even if the compressor fails.

2. The indoor unit (fan) often gets power separately from the outdoor unit. If the outdoor unit loses power due to a tripped breaker, faulty wiring, or blown fuse, the compressor won’t run but the fan will.

3. Thermostat signal issues. The system may fail to send the correct signal to start the compressor. This can happen due to control board faults or communication errors between indoor and outdoor units.

4. Capacitor failure. The compressor relies on a capacitor to start. If the capacitor is weak or damaged, the compressor cannot start, while the fan (with a separate capacitor) keeps running.

5. Overload or safety protection. Compressors have built-in protection. If the unit overheats or detects abnormal pressure, it shuts off the compressor to prevent damage, but allows the fan to continue.

6. Low or leaking refrigerant. Insufficient refrigerant can trigger pressure switches that stop the compressor from running, while the fan still operates normally.

7. Internal faults like a seized motor or worn-out components can stop the compressor entirely, even though other parts of the AC keep working.

8. If relays or the PCB fail, the compressor won’t receive the command to start, but the fan circuit may still function.

For troubleshooting, check power supply, settings, and visible issues first, but for electrical or refrigerant-related faults, it is recommended to hire a professional.

A few months back, I realised that my AC compressor was not working although the fan was running. When I called an AC technician, I was informed that my split AC compressor not working but fan is running because of some power fluctuations.

• Power fluctuation:

• Dirty air filters:

An additional burden on the AC compressor is caused by condenser coils and dirty air filters. After that, the HVAC system as a whole will shut down due to overheating.

• Problem with capacitor, and starter relay:

The AC compressor is powered by the capacitor and starter relay, and malfunctions in these two parts are among the most frequent reasons why your compressor is having issues. Replacing them is the best possible action in this case.
